talked with doc about oozing

Thanks to those that responded to my post about my oozing issues.

I spoke with the doc.  He said I am doing absolutely everything right-with the pad and all.  Said when the drains came out it probably stirred things around and I have some accumualtion that needs to come out.  He said it will come out anywhere it finds an opening.  He said to keep the area clean and try to keep it dry (yeah right, not the way this thing is leaking).  He offered to put a bag on it to catch all the leakage to not ruin my clothes.  Nice gesture!!  I am not worried about my clothes, and I think I can live like this for a few days.

I had to explain how bad it was.  It got really bad yesterday.  Once I take the pad off, it instantly starts to ooze.  It's fast!!

I just must be one of the real juicy ones!!  LOL!

At least it is coming out Erica, as you know that is a GOOD thing although I am sure not what you want and scary.  Glad you called your doc and all is "ok" with him.  If the drainage changes color or appearance as in more purulent (*****) or you run a fever then I would call again (obviously).

Hang in there.. hopefully it will slow down soon!
Hugs, Melissa

Erica, you are definitely taking this better than I did. I cried for 2 days straight. Everytime I had to clean the incision I cried, I ate/ I cried, I slept/ I cried, i showered/ I cried....you get the picture.
It's not pouring out anymore(still oozing though), but the area that was swollen before the oozing (mons pubis), is now a big popped blister!!

I really want to get this reccovery moving, I didn't anticipate this setback. I really thought that by week 3 post op, I would be walking around pretty normally ( not like the huntch back of notra dame).

I feel horrible that I can't take care of my family like I should, cleaning, cooking, playing w/ my son, and playing w/ my husband (if you catch my drift!).

I hope your oozing gets better, only steaks should be that juicy!

Hey Jessie,

I am so sorry you cried.  I hear you about not being able to do much.  I figured the same, as far as being able to move around.  Today, he wants me to do nothing, but sit, to stop the draining.  I don't want to just sit.  I want to do things.  Things need to be done around here.  I will listen to him though.  So far so good.

Just adding a note to let you and Jessie know you aren't alone--- I posted this update above:

the oozing from my left hip (which is huge, shiny and now stretch-marked from the fluid) has been going on for 3 weeks straight-- all just serous fluid-- then yesterday it turned bloody and is now a dime sized hole. It better stop right there! I let it drain-- re-cover in fresh gauze when it soaks through.

My fluid retention's unreal. I weigh what I did before they cut off 10 pounds-- three weeks later!

Over the pubis I have a little 2 inch line of pus-topped mess I'm also trying to clean/drain. My drain holes did this too-- I used antibtiotic gel pads to baste 'em in their own juices and they healed nicely.

Neither of these are much more than an inconvenience. Nothing is, compared to the *****in' hernia site in my muscle layer--- feel like I was shanked in prison. It's what's holding me back.

Nipples, breasts, arms and central (chest to pubis) incision  are still covered in the same h20 proof tape they have been since the beginning.

All in all, I'd say nothing really hurts badly but the hernia. Arms ouch a lot because they're bruised-- breasts are completely painless, underbelly incision is pulled taut from swelling and pulls quite a bit, and is gettin' a lil' crusty.

Neither are you are alone in dealing with the drainage issues. I'm six weeks post-op as of yesterday and my drainage has finally began to settle down. It started from my naval (belly button) for a week and then it stopped. However, after that I developed a seroma on the left side of my stomach. Then on July 3rd I woke up to a wet mess. The drainage began again out of my naval. The area over my seroma became black and puffy. It looked like my skin was pealing and I thought it was from the tape. Well Monday morning I sprung a leak from that site. It drained for more than 30 minutes. Today it still oozes a little. Just a pad a day now. So please be encouraged that this too shall pass. The fluids have to come out of your body and it will come out of any opening it finds.

Hi Ansampson,

You have so much strength.  I don't know if I can deal with drainage that long.  I hope that it resolves itself soon.  Are you back to work yet?  Doc took me off until August 10.  I had to beg for 6 weeks, because I am a dealer at a casino, and the table would hit my incision.  I wanted to make sure I was really healed up before going back.  However, you say you are 6 weeks out and still oozing some-that concerns me.

Good luck to you.  I hope things get better for you soon!!

I am glad you guys are posting here so you realize you aren't alone in all of this!  Lots of us had a breaking point that had us in tears...I was hanging in there through the "I want to die" phase until my knees started swelling so badly they hurt worse than the surgical areas!  I was already depressed about being so immobile and uncomfortable...but now I couldn't even get up on my own 2 feet to go to the restroom!  My knees were my breaking point, and maybe oozing is yours.  It all passes though, and fairly quickly when you look back on it later (seems like forever right now though).  Your family will be ok, take care of yourself so you can recover as quickly as possible.  I totally understand how you are feeling though...
