Can anyone out there that has had RNY for weight loss and has had Plastic surgery tell me.........When i had my pre op last week the doctor looked in my throat because he said they put a tube down during plastic surgery...........have i not read or heard that if you have had RNY that you can't  have that done because you run a risk of tearing your pouch?

I am nervous about this.........should i be calling them ?

Anytime you undergo general anesthesia, you are entubed - a tube is placed down your throat.  This is nothing to worry about.  It doesn't go down that far.

THANK YOU for your reply.  I remember people even saying they have a medic alert bracelet  and then others say no.

I know the doctors do this many times and know what they are doing.  Just nerves getting the best of me with my what ifs.  :-)    Thanks again

The tube you are referring to is a Nasogastric Tube.  Also known as an NG tube.  This tube is normally inserted "blindly" by medical professionals.  The measure from your ear to the tip of your nose then down to your xyphroid process (bottom of sternum).  They mark the tube there and know they have to insert it in your nose down to your stomach to that mark.  However with us as bypass patients they will meet resistance if they do this since our stomachs aren't that large.  Some professionals will try to push past the resistance and well this can basically perforate or tear a hole in our pouches.  This is why you have seen "no blind insertion of NG tubes" probably on the boards before.  The tube you get during surgery is an ET tube to keep your airway open while you are under general anesthesia and does not go any further than your larynx.. no where near your stomach..You do not have to worry about that, just like BigCity Girl said.  Good luck and no worries there my friend.

Thank you Melissa you set my mind at ease,   in your opinion is this something that we should be wearing on a medic alert just in case we are not able to tell them in case in are knocked out?

It is always a good idea to have some sort of medical alert on us to say the following:

Gastric Bypass - RNY
No Blind NG Tubes
No NSAIDS

and if you have other medical problems or allergies include those as well.
