I'm not sure about the leakage any longer but it has been suggested that an MRI may be necessary for normal breast cancer screening. I'll defer to one of the surgeons who post here.

The only way to confirm a leak from a silicone implant it via MRI - so the manufacturer requires an informed consent process that recommends what you indicated. My surgeon's take on it was of course an MRI would be necessary if there was ever a problem (change in contour etc., injury to the chest) and that a longer term evaluation - 10 years out - might be a prudent thing to do. The industry is very concerned with all the negative publicity that surrounded silicone as a product for the last 15 years - most of the well-done clinical evaluation found no link between silicone products and inflammatory issues like fibromyalgia and RA. I read a lot of that literature after my surgeon suggested that silicone was the way to go and I decided the risks were minimal. Susan
