Looking for a plastic surgeon in Boston area who..well...actually cares.
Hello,
I attended a plastic surgery session at the community hospital (Emerson, Concord MA) where I had my gastric banding procedure. However, the new program and surgeon clearly does not work with many bariatric patients for they submitted prior to a year out of surgery and they haven't documented any of my issues correctly. I asked my PCP to write a letter, which she did, but I later learned that the surgeon is responsible to follow up with the documentation. I wish I had known that the surgeon was mostly responsible for trhe back and forth with the insurance company for I would have chosen wiser. Not suprisngly I was denied by BCBS HMO Blue (although I know they cover both abdominoplasty and panni with documented issues). The staff at my PS actually told me that they haven't once seen it covered. Not surprising if you aren't giving the insurance companies any incentive to cover it. However, it clearly does if we (the patients) arm ourselves with knowledge and find a PS who cares enough to help his patients avoid financial debt. So if anyone knows of any surgeon in the Boston area who 1) knows the insurance game and 2) will at least help document your issues, please tell me about your experience. I don't expect miracles. I just expect after loosing close to 140 pounds with a lapband going on three years now...a fight to the end!
Thank you everyone and I hope you have an amazing time post surgery with a happy, healthy life.

hey,
i can't answer your question (though i wish i could, 'cause i'm just starting the process of looking into plastics as well) but i noticed your post and wanted to say hello -- i'm moving to cambridge in 2 months and also have a band. do you go to any support meetings or have other friends in the area who are also banded? it would be great to meet up! my personal email address, btw, is [email protected].

Hey, Sarah.....
Welcome to Cambridge!.... I have a friend with a band and her story is vastly different than mine. She had it done before it was popular in the states and it's been difficult to say the least. (I don't know the whole story but it seems an improper installation)..Most friends are bypassers and as for support groups, I haven't gone in awhile for I moved after my surgery and it's not the easiest to get to my hospital that performed the surgery. Frankly, I am too busy having a friggin' blast and I am in the gym alot so...I suppose it's a good thing I'm absent. :) I should make more of an attempt though to share my experience with others to show we can keep up with the bypassers (weight loss maintenance and rate of loss) with perserverance and determination.
I'll email you on your gmail account and show the spots in the Cambridge and Boston! I am enjoying being a single, professional gal in the city to oh so say the least........... :)

try Dr. Brueing out of Faulkner/Brigham. He specializes in WLS, is board certified . My surgeon said that he does beautiful work on WLS patients, and specializes with breast reconstruction for cancer patients as well. He will be speaking at Brigham on June 2nd to WLS patients. If you would like more info, please email me and I will send you his office info. I see him the middle of june for a consult. His office was very nice over the phone.
