I'm really curious to see responses. I called the flex spending office and they said it can't be used for cosmetic procedures. Hmmm...

I heard the same thing - they follow the IRS guidelines when it comes to deducting cosmetics as uninsured medical expenses.  I know I would have loved to deduct the cost of my plastics from my taxes but I know two others here who got caught after an audit a few years out and ended up paying 20% interest and a whopping penalty.   Seems unfair!

I think my husband used his flex spending for my surgery.  He's an accountant at a hospital so I hope he knew what he was doing!  I'll double check with him but I'm pretty sure he used it.  Since I had a deductible and a co-insurance to meet and the procedure was insurance approved it wasn't considered cosmetic but medically necessary so maybe that is why we were able to use it.

Worked just fine. However, my expenses were considered medically necessary, so that may be why they didn't balk.

I called and was told that even if it's necessary they still consider it plastics and as such will not cover it. I don't want to throw a pile of cash in that account only to discover they won't let me use it and I have to buy 90 cases of bandaids to use it up!

If you don't want to buy a gazillion bandaids, you can always buy your vitamins, that is covered.

My point is that I don't want to put $10k in the account, not be able to use it for plastics, then have to spend $10k...all the vitamins on the planet aren't worth 10k!
