defective jp drain

hey everyone,

Looking for some advice here.  I still have 4 drains in from my LBL on 1/29.  Sometime Saturday night I noticed the bulb on the drain at my right side was loosing suction.  Called the surgeon (who was away, so the covering doc called me back).  He gave me some suggestions and advice on how to get the suction back, which we tried but no luck.  On Sunday before I was about to get in the shower hubby came in for a drain site inspection, YIKES the only thing there was the plastic tubing (still stitched to my skin) and the bulb on the end of it, the rest (solid white part) was now in my body detatched from the clear tubing and bulb.

Has anyone ever had or heard of this happening.  When my surgeon called me today (after returning back to the area) he seemed quite perplexed and said he has never heard of this happening!!  WTH!!

Only me!!

Nope, never heard of the tubing disconnecting from the actual internal drain.  I've heard of bulbs and tubing becoming punctured and losing suction but not this!  Wow, hope they can get that thing out of you without much pain.

Hi Sandy,

I am trying to visualize what white part you are talking about, that is in your body....

My drains are attched to my body by a stitch, then the long tube attached to a bulb.

I don;t have any white parts on my drains?

I have little blue connection thingies but these are near the bulb end, not the part attached to my body.

Geez.....I don't know!

Please keep us posted! I also am losing suction in one of my drains....luckily I am going to my surgeon tomorrow so I will have him check it but as far as missing parts, everything appears to be in tact.

Please explain what you mean about the white thing missing. I am so curious!

Good luck and call your surgeon if you have pain or anything. wow...

Hugs,
Denise

Denise,

If you type in a google search "jackson pratt drain" and then click on images you will see what the drain looks like, it consists of 3 parts, the bit on the inside (that is the white bit, the clear external tube, and the bulb).  The white bit is what is still inside me, it should have a little bit of the white part on the outer surface of my skin where the drain is and that is where you can see the connection of the white bit and the clear tubing and yes it was stitched to my skin I am assuming the stitch broke because the only bit that was still stitched to me was the clear tube which my husband cut away from me.

Hope that kinda explains it a bit better, lol kinda strange to explain without seeing an example ya know!!

Lisa,

I think the drain was ready to come out when it happened, I was down to about 20cc or less.
