4 yr old PDD being a "good boy" after my surgery
Any one else have a child with PDD/Autism and just have surgery?
My 4 yr old son Derek who has PDD/Autism and has a habit of running down the hall and "ramming into my stomach". Since I came home for the hospital and we told him mama has a booboo belly he has been fine (I'm so surprised!!) he is my lil sensory child.
Anyone else have special children?
Cheryl
Hi Cheryl,
My son has been diagnosed with Aspergers/high functioning autism and is 5 1/2 years old. I explained to him what I was doing (not in detail) and took the time to show him where I'd be by driving to the hospital ahead of time and giving him the phone number so he could call whenever he wanted to. I was careful to give him plenty of warning as he is very much about routines. When he saw me in the hospital he cried a little bit but put on a brave face. It really broke my heart but I was home the next day and all was fine. He was very good when I came home and was careful to not be too rough with me for a while.
Now, almost 4 months later, he is always asking me if something is sugar free or not. This tells him if it's up for grabs for him or me! He understands that sugar is a off limits for mommy.
Take care,
JP
My 7 year old daughter has Autism also. I did not go into any details before surgery (she isn't high functioning) but I did call her from the hospital and after I came home I made her my helper and she was very willing to help me do things around the house.
I also made it a point to show her my 6 "boo boo belly" marks so she would understand to be more careful. She is also extremely sensory and very into deep pressure so it was quite a change for her to not get her daily squeezes and physical time from Mom. I was fortunate though that her teacher is exceptionally in tune with her and she was able to adjust her "input" at school to help us out at home. We also had her wraparound staff give her some extra physical activity time to make up for the slack.
Good luck with your recovery!
Christine
