Telling your young kids

Hi Everyone, I got my date! I'm set for 8/29. I have been pondering how I will explain things to my very intelligent 5 year old son. I of course don't want to go into great detail but he will surely ask WHY? WHAT'S WRONG? when I tell him Mommy is going to the hospital. How did you all handle that? I don't want to lie to him but don't want to scare him either. Thanks, JP

JP, My son was 6 when I had my surgery, and I was very careful at what I said, not just because they are so young, but I didn't want him to visit me in the hospital and see me hooked up to everything and get freaked out. So I just basically explained to him that I was going to have an operation on my belly to help me get better and to feel better, so I could have a better life with him. If you are still at a loss, ask your surgeon if he has any ideas, or the phyciatrist (if you had to see one before surgery).

I agree with Amanda. That is pretty much how we went about it with our boys too. They were 6 and 8. Their only concern was that I was going to change all of the sudden. But we explained that my changes would be slowly over time, nothing drastic like the next day or anything..lol Good luck to you!

I had surgery 3/28 and my 6 yr old handled things very well. I told him that the Dr. was going to do an operation on my belly to help me feel better so I wouldn't be hurting all the time any more. It's not easy to tell them but they handle it well. Good luck, Billie

I don't have a date yet.. But... I have started telling my son that I am going back to the hospital where I had his sister. He's probably happy I won't bring another baby home. This time his dad will be with him and he should adjust to me being away. I'm checking out your profile now to see if you are home from the hospital yet. I'd love to know how your son handled your time in the hospital and post op sensitivity. My son could not stand not being able to climb on my after my C-section. HUGS- Heather
