I am a 375 # woman with 3 children (1 girl 2 boys) and about to have an open RNY. I know genes do play a part in the way the body developes but I am really concerned about my daughter. She is 7 years old and weighs 140 #'s. I am so scared that in the next decade or so she will be right here where I am and I dont want that for her. The boys are both at ideal weight; one of them a little underweight but thats workable, they have been blessed to have thair fathers genes. ANY advice will be welcome. Thanks!

Hi Sharekia: I had my surgery February 16th, and started out at 404 lbs!! I have lost 75lbs to date. I have an 8yr old daughter who is on the short/chubby side (starting at 4"2 & 90 lbs), and I always see alot of myself in her. Since the surgery, I have asked for her help, as far as eating healthier, and walking with Mommy. She is glad to do it, and has lost about 10lbs in the process. Though her doctor feels that she can still afford to lose another 10 lbs, she did say that she was happy to see her making better choices, and living a more active lifestyle, and that meant alot to my daughter. She actually prefers water over juice most of the time, which makes a big difference!! Kids can be cruel when they want to be, especially to overweight children, but as long as they feel the love & security from us as parents, they will turn out just fine!! Best of luck with your surgery!!

I know how you feel. I have 2 girls and a boy. My first daughter I see so much of myself in her. She is 5' and 125. Since I have been pre-op she has lost a little. We have all stopped drinking soda. I stopped buying it. That is one of the reasons I want to be a healthier and thinner Mom. I think it will help her in the long run. I think it will help the whole family when Mom is ready to go swimming, hiking, wallking...ect. Good Luck to you!

You are doing the best thing you can do for your kids. This surgery will allow you to the example you want to be for the kids. I had surgery 5-1/2 weeks ago and already my kids are eating better. Just the elimination of fast food alone has made a big impact. Good luck with your surgery! Rachel

Tracey, I can't remember the growth curve but I don't know if 38 lbs. is too overweight for that age (can't check my book, it's at home, I'm at work :o( Anyway, it appears you have a surgery date coming up-CONGRATS and good luck to you. My son is only 2 and is VERY petite (only 21 lbs.) but when I looked back in my baby book I was very petite until I turned 3. So I am hoping he doesn't follow the same path I did. That's part of my motivation for this surgery is to set a better example for him and so I can active WITH him to keep us both healthy. Best wishes to you!

Hey all, I know that I sometimes over worry about my child's eating. He is 23 months and pretty much self regulates. My dilema is this: I was always a sneak eater because someone always had me on a diet as a kid, so I think I ate more sneaking than if I would have just been given a treat now and then. My best friend is thin and grew up in a household where sweets were always available (ie:candy always in the candy dish, cookies of different kinds for after school, etc) Yet, I have talked to other overweight people that say that it was always available to them, but they ate it. Who knows. So far though, Devlin has been self regulating. I do give him Kool-aid, but I water it down a lot. I do wish I could get him interested in vegetables and fruit. We still give him baby food veggies and fruit because he'll eat it and we worry about his nutrition. Any advice for my picky eater? Kerry

Tracey, I have a 3 year old too and she is 36lb and her Dr. thinks she is perfect. Your little is NOT overweight. It could be that her height just hasn't cought up with her weight. My oldest (now 8) was a short chubby 3 year old and my Mom and Grandmother would tell me all the time that I'm making here out to be just like me....whatever that ment. Anyway she had a growth spurt and all was well. Little kids are great at self regulating. It sounds like you are doing great with the health meals and snack. Also you'd be amazed at how much they slim down once they start school. They do play hard. ***Sharekia I don't know about 'fat genes' and how they effect the next generation but I would have a heart to heart with her and just let her know what life is like for you now and let her know what you want for her. Help her to make good food choices and let her be part of your weightloss. Have her walk/exercise with you...It could by your guys alone time. Something special that just the two of you do together. I'm sure she is a beautiful girl and if nothing else it would be a wonderful bonding time for you two. Good luck with your surgery...
