having a baby post-op???
Hi I was just curious if there is anyone out there that may have gotten pregnant after weight loss surgery???? I know that they say you can have children but I want to read or hear about someone elses experience. I am hoping to have WLS but I dont want to ruin the chance to have a kid... Thanks for anyone that responds
Hi Brandy,
I will share my experience with you as I just had a baby in December. I had the WLS in October 2002 and had gone from 230 to 165lbs. My type 2 diabetes had disapeared and I was healthier than anytime in the past 20 years. I am 42 and wanted to have another child, so I asked my surgeon if he would mind my not waiting for another year before conceiving. He agreed that it would be fine since I had a good grasp of what to eat and how to stay healthy.
I conceived a few months later and can honestly say that it was the healthiest and easiest pregnancy I have had thus far. I took two prenatals a day and saw a perinatologist through my pregnancy. The reason I chose a high risk OB was because of my previous pregnancies and the complications w/ each one. Previously, I had developed gestational diabetes(and later type 2)and got preeclampsia at the end of each pregnancy and had birth complications.
Well, this time, we joked about how we were waiting for something to go 'wrong' and it never did. I did develop gest. diabetes, but this time it was at 34 weeks instead of much earlier in the pregnancy. The thing that amazed me was that w/ previous pregnancies, I was big to begin with and got bigger all over. This time, though, I was small all over and just my tummy got big...for the first time, I felt like the cute, little pg women I would see and be envious of. Anyway, it felt great to be normal sized and healthy for the first time while going through the changes of pregnancy.
I wish you luck as you continue your journey

Tana,
Thanks so much for responding. I at one point in time was pregnant and miscarried. Until recently when I was studying this weight loss surgery, I didnt realize the miscarriage could have been due to my weight. I want to have the weight loss surgery done but was afraid of what might happen or could happen if I wanted to have children. Your story set my mind at ease. Thank you very much for sharing it with me.
If anyone else has any stories about having children after surgery, I would love to hear them.
Thanks
Brandy
actually a doctor told me that obesity can make you have trouble getting pregnant.
The second surgeon that I visited I asked about this because my husband and I would love to have two more children and he, to my surprise, told me that a lot of woman have this surgery to get pregnant. He said morbid obesity can cause women to be sterile...
He did suggest you wait one to two years for your body to heal.
and my OBGYN said that (not sure how to explain this) but you ovulate less that does not sound right but I took an ovulation test and he said I did not ovulate enough to get pregnant but we could have missed it by one day or so or I if I loose weight it will be better.
I guess it is like a level or something at any rate he told me my weight could be a problem.
So he said yes I would be totally able to have a baby after surgery and it would be a healthier pregnancy
Brandy, I had my wls o 11-19-01 and found out on 10-31-02 that I was gonna be a momma. I lost 162 pounds pre-Shyera and it was an uncomplicated pregnancy. The only thing was that at every Dr.s appt. I was not gaining enough weight!!! That caused me to try and eat more and I kind of threw myself out of whack and am now trying to get back into the game. Good luck and may You be blessed with whatever you desire
Thanks to everyone that responded, after researching and reading your responses I figured out that it was probably my overweight that caused me to miscarry last year. Now I am looking forward to having the WLS and hopefully carrying a baby a few years afterwards. Thanks again for all the best wishes and responses to me.
Brandy,
We'll I don't know about problems conceiving. I am almost 6 weeks out of surgery and I'm 5 1/2 weeks pregnant. I was even on the pill, and I only have 1/2 of one ovary.. so for me pregnancy was way too easy, unexpected and shocking! Good luck in your journey.
