I got a call from the nurse yesterday.. she said that the insurance will not approve me until I get my TSH levels for my thyriod under control. I told her I had no idea that my thyriod played any factor in their decision and why didnt anyone tell me about this before since they have already known for 6 months! My levels are at 30 and need to be at 4! So I call my primary Dr. who already knew my levels were that high but told me that I was "borderline" and didnt need to be taking medicine..... So one Dr. tells me that im fine and I dont need it, and the other says there is no way we are approving her for surgery at her condition. So im at another road block... Another bump in the damn road... I went to have my labs taken again yesterday and after we find out what my levels are now, is when we will get an answer which will be NO from the insurance because I havent been on any medication to help lower it and I could have been this whole time. They started me on some medication yesterday but the dosage is so small that it isnt going to help much anyways. SO if my levels are still at 30.. and I need to get this down to 4 then its going to take a looong time. I probably wont have the surgery for 6 months to a year now.... Im just praying right now that my levels are down some and not still at 30 or higher. ugh... so frustrating. Epecially since EVERYONE knew my levels were that high and never bothered to worry about it and do anything about it till now... after the insurance gets involved. Why didnt anyone mention that my TSH levels would have a part in what the insurance answer would be so I could have controled it a while I was doing all of the other things I had to do. The surgeons office knew my levels were that high, my primary Dr. knew they were that high so why is it such a big thing now?!? It could take years to get my levels at the level that they want it at... I have been trying to go at this process for 4 years now. I am getting so tired... I have done EVERYTHING that want me to do. and everytime something always comes up and get in the way of me having this surgery. There are things my family and I have had to put on hold until after I have this surgery. Like I need to go back to school but I cant until after I have my surgery, my husbadn already wants more children but I cant, until after my surgery.. and the longer we keep having to wait is just putting more stress and strain on myself and my family.

Wow Amber, tough day!!! Definitely a bump in the road. I have to say that the fact that you have been fighting for this for 4 years is so inspiring & admiral. Keep up the fight for your health. Push for it. You will get there. Don't give up.

Don't give up otherwise they win I had similar but different situation and once insurance saw that I wasn't giving up and kept pushing forward they went ahead and approved me. Like I said my situation was different and didn't deal with levels but just the hurdles that the insurance wanted me to jump. Couldn't the RNY help resolve the thyroid issues? just a thought I have no knowledge of how TSH levels are affected. I'm sorry I don't have any real solution but wanted you to know that I've been there done that and I'm on your side. Cyber hugs to ya

Vent here!!!! The approval process is very long & frustrating, to put it lightly!! KEEP FIGHTING!!!!!!!! You will get the approval!!!! Glad that they finally put you on medicine. The insurance company IS NOT your friend!! They are just holding out!!! I know that is not good news, but, maybe between your primary doctor & surgeon, you guys can try to figure out how long it will be for your levels to come down. Ask the doc how the medicine affects you (I think they start with a low dose of that medicine to see how your body reacts to it & after another blood test should increse the dosage) Hope that info helps!!! -Jamie

Oh gosh thank you for the support! I really needed to hear so encouragement. My primary Dr. called me back today and said she got my new lab work back, and its alot worse than we thought. My levels are through the roof and my body is a total mess. I have been trying to diet and excercise for awhile now but am still gaining weight and feeling sluggish, and so they got me on a high dose of the medication now and I will see a specialist soon. I will retest in a month to see how it is. I am now more educated on how it works and whats going to happen and yes your right they will keep testing me till they find the right dosage. I hope it works soon. This should help with my mood and depression and my energy level and all those other goodies. Also I found out that if I would have had the surgery with my levels at what they are that it would have been very difficult for me to lose weight and it could get dangerous for my health. SO im bummed that I cant have the surgery soon, but I am happy that I am going to take care of this now. SO thanks again for the encouragement, im not giving up and I will have my surgery someday even if it takes years!

So sorry to hear that! The thyroid is no joke. My hubby has been on meds for 10 years for it and they won't even let him get oral surgery (to remove wisdom tooth) without his doctors clearance. The doc ok'ed it as long as he wasn't knocked out. He was supposed to have his WLS last year but the doc said no way. His levels are better but he still has a way to go to get to the normal range. Hope things work out -Janine
