OT-Cat scratching furniture advice
Ok...we need to get our cats declawed but it's not happening right this minute. Our male cat scratches the couch but only when we're in bed at night. We can lie in bed and hear him...run out and yell at him or spray him but once we're sleeping he's doing it more I'm sure. Anyone have any ideas on how to get him to quit doing it.....or something we can put on the couch so he can't scratch it. We just got a different couch last night and I hate for him to ruin it already grrrrrrrrrr.
When I first got my cat she scratch my counch in a certain spot, so I moved her scratching post to that spot and she has NEVER done it again. Luckily it was the end of the couch. She is now 10 years old. lol lol We did not de-claw cause we live in the country and I wanted her able to defind herself when she was outside. Or to be able to catch the occasional mouse we might get in the house. lol lol Anywho I only by the scratching post that have the rope on it. Dont waste your money on the carpet ones. I think both are about $10 at walmart. You can go to petsmart and pay $30 though. lol lol The way I got her used to it was I put it up at the couch then held her up to it and took her front paws and ran them down the poll like she was scratching it. from that moment forward she has NEVER scratched the couch or any other peace of furniture again. Occasionally when she is frisky she might scratch at a throw rug just playing and that is usually a clue that it is time for me to clip her nails. Hope this helps.

When I was a teenager, I put balloons on the couch in my bedroom. It looks funny & is a little time consuming but it only took a few pops & he was done! I just put them all along the very edge of the cushions and then up the sides. There is a spray that is suppose to smell so bad to them they won't go near it, but I've never tried it.

Since he is only doing this at night when you cannot get to him, you may want to try putting him in another room or even a crate overnight. I think the scratching post right where he wants to scratch may help too. I know my cats hate the smell of Febreeze so that might be an idea too that you could spray on at night before you go to bed.
Oh, and mousing works GREAT without claws. Of my three cats, only one has claws. I'm not sure he would catch a mouse if it crawled over him. He has that Garfield attitude about him. My best mouser has not a single claw but she is also mitten-footed (has extra toes on her paws) so maybe that gives her an advantage LOL.
Good luck.
