Calling all RNY Vegetarians.....
Hey there folks........
So, how many of you who've had the RNY are vegetarians or vegans? I'm looking to have this surgery and I'm vegetarian who sometimes eats fish only. Have you guys had trouble getting in your protein? I love veggies and eat lots of beans... but I heard many cruciferous veggies and beans can cause too much gas... what have you been able to eat or not eat?
Thanks.
I am not a vegetarian but I can tell you that post surgery corn, tomatoes, peas - starchy veggies are not recommended for 6 mos and sparingly after that, broccoli, cauliflower, veggies w/stalks need to be really smooshy or might get stuck. Beans are used alot in chilis and soups etc., quinoa and kasha are good too. Do you do Tofu? You might want to investigate alternative proteins now to have a list handy for after. Your tastes will change so what you think you'd never eat might become your best friend; keep an open mind. Watch the carbs though; beans have carbs and carbs create craving and you don't want to constantly be feeling like you are deprived and craving; eventually you'll give in. You will need to be especially diligent with your vitamins or you will have iron problems since you don't eat meat.
Try doing your current diet on fitday for a few weeks and see how what your pie chart says. Should be 1.5 protein, the other half split 60/40 carbs and fats. Don't worry so much if one day it's 70/30 and another 50/50 as long as it evens out over the course of the week. You will be doing alot of shakes post-surgery I think and that's not a bad thing; keeps the cravings in check.
