If you are allowed to take the time off as a BENEFIT of employment then how can you be disciplined for it? That makes no sense at all. Do you get in trouble for using all of your vacation days too? When you are offered the position as a teacher they try to sell you the position by OFFERING benefits to you. When you accept you are telling them that you will offer them your expertise in lieu a salary and the benefits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those days are yours to use!!!!!! ********! It is part of YOUR total compensation package. When they figure out how much you will cost they look at your total compensation whi*****ludes salary, health benefits, sick time, vacation, personal days...all of it.

I was written up many times for taking sick days, even when I had notes. I finally retired on disability, because I would be needing to take time off for doctor's appointments. Specialists don't have hours that are convenient, so I finally gave up before they could suspend me, or fire me. They don't care. I had used the Family Medical Leave Act benefits several years, but could not use them in the end.
It was an initiative started to improve teacher attendance, and to cut back on teachers abusing sick days to do "fun things" like go to the shore, or vacation. The union reps are powerless to do anything during the meetings, except be a witness and ensure things go according to the contract.

So glad to hear that Charlie is doing better. The attendance meeting, what a joke. As others have said sick day are for sick days, it was not like you were going to the beach. At least the union person was there and it was made note of. (I worked for Verizon who does NOT provide sick days,when I took the union person in with me I could not get a word in edge wise as he was a pretty scrappy guy, which was good for me.) The FMLA is a good idea, let's see what he has to say then, should shut him up real fast and in a hurry. Thanks Trish for bringing up what the rest of us overlooked. Hope things continue to get better.

First off, if this were private industry, you would have the time off. Even as a public "servant" you have the time off. Your contract states that you have up to 10 sick days. If you're not abusing that, then guess what - you have up to 10 sick days. And under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), those absences can be for your own sickness or that of a FAMILY MEMBER. Federal law, baby. So, yes, talk to the union. Know your rights. And his statement of "if everyone in the district took their 10 days" is just ridiculous. By accounting principles, vacation time and sick time "owed" to employees is accounted for in the budget. That's why there's "use it or lose it" time - anything you lose doesn't carry over as an accrual into next year's budget. Anything you are allowed to carry over is an encumbrance on the next year. Now I know the district's budget is hurting and they're looking for ways to save money, but the raw fact is that under the current contract, that's in there just like salary and benefits is. Makes me so mad when people try to use that kind of fear to drive behavior.
Anyway - Good to hear that Charlie is doing well and that they're talking about moving him to the stroke floor. Hopefully things will keep progressing so quickly and positively!
