Does anyone have a Brown Sugar Substitute
I'm trying to find a safe substitute for brown sugar and I came across Whey Low Gold (which is apparently now available at Whole Foods). The nutrition label says the Ingredients are Crystaline fructose, lactose monohydrate (milk) and sucrose. I'm thinking the sucrose is the stuff I need to avoid.
Has anyone found a good substitute? I'm only 6 months out and I'm highly sensitive to sugar.
Also, any links to some good recipes for the holidays? Both me and my oldest brother had surgery this year so this will be our first big holiday. I thought I'd like to make old favorites that are healthy but maybe it's time to find some new favorites too?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Bernie,
I'm not familiar with Whey Low Gold. My beau is a chemist and says sucrose is not sugar. I'm not so sure. Diabetisweet makes a brown sugar sub. You can usually buy it at Target and sometimes Giant. (It's in the pharmacy section.) To me, Diabetisweet has an aftertaste. I use maltitol, regular and brown, available on www.netrition.com. (Shipping is $4.95 for the entire order and is usually very fast.) Maltitol is a sugar alcohol, so too much of it can cause gas/have a laxative effect, but it's a great sub taste-wise. (It's an equal swap, like 1 cup of maltitol is equal to 1 cup of sugar.) I can use Splenda Brown, but if you're sensitive to sugar, you might want to avoid that one.

There is brown sugar substitute made by Nature's Sweet. You can get it on Netrition www6.netrition.com/steels_sweeteners_page.html
They also have white and powdered.
Diabetisweet also has a white and brown sugar substitute. Most of us have found that the malitol by Nature's Sweet bakes as well as sugar.

I just started using the Whey Low products and I have to say they are great. Here's a link to their site in regards to nutritional information:

I've tried other brown sugar substitutes and I find they still have too much of an aftertaste for my liking. I even tried all the products recommended on this board. I don't bake a lot, but I ordered this brand to try some baking for the holidays. I've found that the granular whey low bakes much better than splenda. I can tolerate small amounts of sugar since I am a year out from surgery, so I can't say if it would be ok for you since you stated you are sensitive to sugar.
Here's a few sites you can browse to get recipe ideas:

I use carbquick to bake also and the site provides recipes as well as another message board http://www.tovaindustries.com/carbalose/page1.html

http://eatingwelllivingthin.wordpress.com/ I got the idea to order Whey Low from this blogger (she contributes to the recipes for bariatriceating.com also)
I also get lots of ideas from the PA message board.......we have a lot of great cooks on this forum. Good luck to you! :)
