Q #1:  Today I attended a Lifestyles meeting at Magee (Pittsburgh).  The person I spoke with said that no one in that office does VSG unless there are very extenuating cir****tances.  That leads me to believe they do them very rarely and I'd probably need to find a doc that is more familiar with VSG.  Does anyone know a doc in the vicinity of Pittsburgh that does VSG?  I've looked at the dsfacts.com website since VSG is the first half of DS, but there aren't any docs listed.  I do have an appt with Dr. Courcoulas at the end of October, but the staff person didn't give me a lot of hope for VSG.

Q #2:  When I was inquiring about the VSG with the person at Magee, he asked me why I wanted VSG as they mostly do RNY.  I told him that I really need the ability to take nsaids due to arthritis and I'm already having problems with vitamin deficiencies (iron, D, B12, Mag) and I think the malabsorption would be a really bad idea. Also, I am concerned about the high frequency of reactive hypoglycemia after a few years out.  My question to folks that are a few years or more out, how does sugar affect you now?  Do you experience reactive hypoglycemia (also called late dumping)?

Thanks so much in advance.

Everyone is different on how they react to RNY post-op. I'm over 2.5 years out - I have no malabsorption problems - I take 2 multi-vitamins, 1 calcium supplement, and 1 2500 mg B-12 daily and all of my vitamin levels are great.

I do still dump on sugar - always accidentally (orange juice got me the other week) so I stay away from it. I've also found that if I don't eat every 2 1/2 to 3 hours I start to feel nauseaus, sweaty, shaky - so I try to keep protein bars in my purse or close by in case I find myself without access to food or protein.

Have you thought about the lapband? Its not as invasive and is becoming very popular among people who prefer not to have RNY. Just a thought.

I guess the other question I would have is where is your arthritis? If its in your knees or legs maybe once you lose weight you wouldn't need the NSAIDs as often? Or at all?

I'm not from the Pittsburgh area so have no idea about doctors out there performing VSG - but I'm sure there's a forum out here for that and maybe someone on there could help.

Best of luck to you whichever route you choose.

Kathy

Thanks for you reply Kathy!   I learn so much from folks who are a few years or more out.  Thank you for taking the time to help educate me.

I did investigate the lapband.  In fact, it was what got my attention and started me on my journey to learning about WLS.  However, since the cancer my body seems to reject foreign objects.  Currently, it isn't liking the crown on my tooth.  I've also had to quit wearing earrings.  Doctors just shake their head and say "cancer does weird things".
