Nutritional / Food Resource
Here's a really interesting FREE resource I found this morning, called ShopWell. It's new.
www.shopwell.com
Basically, you input a few parameters about your age, gender, and health "interests" (i.e., weight management, type II diabetes, athletic training, etc.), then state some nutritional preferences (i.e., gluten free, lactose free, low sodium, avoid trans fats, etc.).
Once those parameters are in, you can browse their database by food categories and it provides sorted recommendations for specific name-brand and fresh foods that best match your nutritional needs/preferences.
As an example, if (with my personal preferences in place) I look at the category of yogurt, i see a sorted list showing a 91% match with Oikos plain greek yogurt (no surprise), and a 91% match with 2 other brands/flavors of greek yogurt (one of which I didn't even know existed). Clicking each one shows the nutrition label, complete ingredients list, and highlights on both of the things that are important to me (certain ingredients highlighted, for example). If I've put something on my "avoid" list (like "avoid artificial color") that will be highlighted with a red X and also called out in the "Bad" summary. (there's a "good" and a "bad" summary for each item).
You can click various items and add them to your personal shopping list.
It seems like an interesting way to do your homework about various options as well as to get some ideas for things you might not have known about.
It does include fresh meats, fish, veggies, etc. It does NOT include some "boutique" brands that I'd like it to include, like Arrowhead and Bob's Red Mill. Ah well, hopefully over time they will be added.
Enjoy!
