Cortizone shot - cross post
Hi PA,
I posted yesterday on the fitness forum and received no feedback so I'm trying here. I know I will at least receive some love from the PA folks :o)
I sure am in need of some reassurance. I've been struggling with plantar faciitis for a couple of months and this past Thursday I finally had corizone injections in both feet. Today (this was yesterday. I was completely debilitated and could not walk), I am in so much pain I literally need help walking to the bathrooom. It's really bad and I'm really bummed out. I read online about a side effect called cortizone flare up which I may be experiencing. I am icing them like crazy trying to get some relief.
Have any of you experienced this? Please tell me it will get better soon and it was worth getting the shots. I'm not suppose to run for two weeks and at this point I'm hoping I just walk in two weeks :o(
Update: Monday: Today, I can walk and my pain level is much better. My left foot is pain free and my right foot is still thumpy at the injection site. I don't think I will ever accept a cortizone shot again. When I see the doctor next week I'm really going to let him have it for not telling me I would feel like this. He said it might get worse before it gets better but this was beyond that sort of mild warning.
Have any of you ever experienced anything like this before?

T,
I'm so sorry you're having such a terrible time!!! My mom had plantar faciitis a couple of years ago, and ended up in a walking cast for a few weeks. I think that was to put the pressure from walking on a different part of the foot, but I'm not sure. I think she's been ok since then. She always wears shoes or slippers, something with a cushioned footbed, around the house.
Have you tried taking NSAIDs? You can take them short-term if needed. My family doc said to take Pepsid first, then eat, then take the NSAID. My arms hurt from metal detecting this week, so I followed doc's advice---felt soooo much better and no tummy trouble!
Don't even think about running right now!!! Get your feet healed, then you can run like the wind!!! I hope you get some relief soon!!!

I had a shot in my heel 5 years ago that I thought would kill me. It took three weeks to start working.
I have found since then that foot exercises targeted for strengthening (PT) and rotating your shoes so your foot doesn't get used to the shoe really helps to keep it at bay once your past the painful part. I never wear the same shoes for more than two days in a row. I just keep rotating my choices.
Really sorry to hear you're going thru this with your feet - that has to be misery. Glad the one shot seems to be helping - hopefully the other will kick in soon and they'll be worth it.
I have never suffered from that, but two co-workers and my bff have - my boss and co-worker swear by some yoga stretches they've learned and it really seems to have worked for them. My bff bought GOOD sneakers and honestly that's about all she wears now - it kills her because she was always a shoe freak and in summer lived in flip flops, but no longer. She also does stretching exercises before getting out of bed in the mornings and has said that helps her as well.
Maybe some short term physical therapy would be more helpful than the shots? Or once the shots are working then some PT lessons to learn how to stretch those muscles and tendons that tighten up overnight before getting up and moving in the AM?
I wish you all the best with this - I'm really strugging with what a PT called rotator cuff tendonitis in my left arm right now - this getting old sucks!! LOL!!

Hi,
I deal with plantar facitis every day as well. I have never had the shots though. I work thru the pain with stretching exercises and wearing REALLY good supportive shoes. I've recently purchased a pair of MBT sandals. They are wonderful! They are expensive but so worth not being in pain all day. Now I'm saving for my next pair of MBT's which will be a pair of oxfords I can wear in the winter. I already have a pair of sneakers as well. I'll be switching my shoes each day between the sneakers and the oxfords.
Good luck with the shots. I do hope they work for you.
