Question:  I still take all my vitamins the same as I did after surgery, do I need to continue taking them?  (B1, B12, 2 multi, caluim w/d) along with my thyroid & bc.

Thanks,
Tina

I am not a doctor, but I would say to get your labs done and have them evaluated and then you'll know if you still need the supplements or if you are getting them on your own through your diet.  You will probably still need most of them, but get the labs done to be sure.

Thanks Lisa, I had my labs done in March thru my primary & everything looked great except my iron, so now I also take an iron pill (forgot that one).  So, I guess I just continue taking my meds daily.

I'm obviously not a surgeon, but I would say if you had RNY you will always have to take vitamins and supplements because our systems just do not absorb food the way other people's do - and that's never going to change, even if we are eating better than ever. It's that whole mal-absorption issue we have going on.

And honestly, its like brushing your teeth - get up, take your meds, you're good for the day. Of course consult your surgeon on this but I'm guessing Dr P will say to definitely keep taking them.

And hey, congrats on your upcoming surgiversary!!

Yep, the vitamins are for life.

And even if you're NOT a WLS patient - my OB/GYN once told me that a woman simply cannot eat enough of anything to get adequate calcium! Women MUST take supplements!

We don't absorb the B vitamins as we did pre surgery - and deficits there can cause serious damage to the nervous system. Not something to mess around with!
