I was talking to a friend who is going through the process of preparing for WLS. She said she is getting dishartened because the people at the support group meetings were NOT successful. When she mentioned this to the doctor, she said that people who need to get back on track were the ones who came to the meetings.

I want to thank all of you on this board and at the Barix meetings for being such a wonderful positive influence!!  You are always full of ideas, support and encouragement! I am so thankful that the "old timers" stay around to share their experiences and help me along.

Thank you, thank you, thank you

I think its important for your friend to realize that the surgery is not a cure for obesity, it is only a tool to help you get onto the right path of making wise decisions in your food choices. If you are not willing to make a LIFETIME COMITTMENT to yourself you must realize that the surgery will not get you what your looking for. It is also important to note that everyone who comes to support meetings isn't trying to get back on track, some of us need to be among others who understand what the daily struggles are and may need to get focused on coping methods to avoid going off track. We all need to be there for each other and reap the rewards from what we have worked so hard to accomplish. Hoping your friend can see the positive aspects associated with support meetings and the comittment process.

Some days your the dog and some days your the hydrant.

Kristine,

Y'know, we all started right where you (and your friend) are.  The difference is just that we're a little longer along the way.  It's people like you who will fill in the ranks as time goes on and will continue and extend the tradition of support.

And yes, I believe we are all connected and that my success ultimately is connected to your success... that participation in support groups and support activities like this forum are what will keep my head in the right place and my eating under some semblance of control.

:-)

My summer schedule has not permitted me to attend the Barix meetings this summer but....through those meetings I learn so much it's hard to even express!

The support is critical for success - this isn't a solo flight!

Support is so important because this is NOT easy. I say that we choose how we measure our success. Do I wish i had made it to my goal weight ? Yes, am I angry at myself for gaining some weight back yes and no. Yes because i am gonna have to lose it again, no because i learned from the weight gain what I still need to work on. Am I a success because I no longer weigh 360 lbs, I now have more people that I love and that love me than I ever imagined and have done so many news things it is too long to list right now? HECk yes!!!

Good luck in your journey
