Calling All Runners
Hey everyone--
So as I posted on roll call a couple of days ago my friend wants me to start running with them in the fall...they are a hardcore runner and I want to get in a bit of shape before I start to tackle this endeavor...so as a complete newbie to the running scene what do you recommend as a starting program to get me running? What is the best course of action? I don't have a treadmill anymore so I will be hitting the walking/running path at the local park...any advice or a program you used when you started running?? Thanks for the help!!
Much luv!

Ok...so I am soooo not a runner....but have been doing some jogging on the treadmill.
C25K (couch to 5k) program is supposed to be pretty good...you can google it and print out the work outs...and if you have an ipod...I'm almost certain there are Nike podcasts or something to that effect that do basically the same thing w/ music and voice overs to prompt you when to run and when to walk and all that (not) fun stuff lol...Karen G will know better, and Beth M. might have some fabulous ideas too!
Good luck!

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.
Pam--I checked out the C25K site and it looks like something that I can easily follow! What a great resource for beginning a running program!!! Thanks so much!!

Throwing in my 2 cents here. Why is it that so many WLS people feel it necessary to start running. I realize it's probably something they've rarely done before but running isn't always the best exercise. It is hard on your joints which may already be compromised by years of excess weight. Many experts will tell you that you can get the same benefits cardiovascularly by walking. It's much easier on your body. I'm sure I'll get flamed or something but I've rarely seen a runner look happy and smiling out on the street. You shouldn't feel you need to run in order to fit in or be like others. Start out walking and build on that. Personally, I think you'll enjoy it more...

Hi! I am definitely going to start out with walking and build up to running. Running is something I have always wanted to try and do...and at 2years out and having lost 176 lbs it is something I FEEL CONFIDENT trying now. I think the further out we get the more important it is to continue setting goals for ourselves and since I always was afraid to try running for fear of looking stupid or having my "fluff" jiggling everywhere and knowing people would laugh at me --I never did it...now I am much more confident in my ability to at least set a goal and try it out. I am not flaming you or anything...but I think it is important to support each other. Two years ago your post probablly would have had me second guessing myself but today I know all the things I can do and now I want to push myself and my boundaries even more. Its about taking this second chance at life and really LIVING it by doing things I always wanted to do but let my weight stop me. I am not going to do that anymore. So I am going to def start out with baby steps and build my endurance and see just what I can accomplish. But thank you for your concern and for posting your point of view.

Pam's reply is probably best. I'm not a 'runner' but I do run and I will do a marathon. Its a nice challenge and you can keep the challenges for yourself going.
Start slow... intervals I liked best. Now I can run a whole hour without walking.
Its not everyone's cup of tea but at least you should try it to see if you like it. SOME people I know LOVE it.
Good luck
