Another beginning
Good Afternoon all! :) I'm so excited to find you all. Just a quick intro, my name is Sarah and I am around 470 lbs. A little over two years ago I had what I call my faux surgery. I was working and through my work insurance I did everything I was supposed to do and it came time for my surgery. We were going to do it laprascopically but I was very clear with the dr that I had fought so long that if he couldn't do it that way to go ahead and do it open. I was taken in to the operating room with such hope, put under, and then woke up on my way out of the operating room asking the nurse "is it done?" when she looked at me with this sorrowful gaze and said the dr would be in to talk to me. I just knew it, they put me under, I had two small incisions in my stomach and they had NOT completed my gastric bypass. This has been devastating to me and I have fought and fought to lose this weight naturally and I just can't.
So, here we are, I've been living in PA for 2 years. I was fired from my job because my physical pain was causing me to be less than effective and so now I am pursueing Medicaid. I have my appointment on Wednesday so I'm hoping it will only take a few weeks for them to make that decision and accept me.
I'm very nervous about this whole process because medicaid is completely new to me. I know they will pay for gastric bypass but I'm not sure what hoops I will have to jump through first. My Dr is willing to do anything and everything to help me get surgery so I'm thankful to have him in my corner.
I can't wait to get to know you all. We just gotta keep on keeping on. :)

Hi Sarah and welcome to the PA board. Great group of people on bere with tins of support and advice. Sorry to hear about your previous experience. Why couldn't the surgeon do your surgery? Did you have other complications? I hope you have found someone who can help you this time.
Take care and keep us posted.
Kathy

Sarah,
Welcome to the PA Board! As Kathy said, we are a great group of people with a lot of good advice and LOTS more support and love. I have met many wonderful people on this board and at support group meetings. Where do you live? If you live near Philly, Barix Clinics has a really great support group. There are others in the area, but I feel we are the best!!
I am so sorry that you have gone through all this nonsense, but I totally understand your frustration! It took me over a year to be approved and have my surgery. It is perfectly normal to be nervous about everything especially with new insurance. You would think that insurance companies would be jumping for joy that people are taking control of their lives and having this surgery. I guess they feel that they are losing money because once you lose the weight, you no longer need to be on so many medicines and seeing so many doctors, etc.
Good luck to you and keep us updated on how things are going....
Beth

welcome, and a word of advice.
Make sure all i's are dotted and t's are crossed for PA medicaid to pay for it. I was denied the first time because my records were not all as they should have been. Had an appeal hearing, the hospital fixed the records, and I am now 2 weeks post op. It has taken me 13 months of jumping thru hoops to get the surgery thru medicaid paying. Some people get it faster, others longer.
Where are you from in PA?

Hello everyone! Thank you so very much for your outpouring of support. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm needing alot of support right now. I'm so scared because if they don't accept me for Medicaid I don't know what I'm going to do. I can't physically work right now and my fiance is supporting me so I can do without the finances if I have to but the insurance is what I'm after. I hurt my knee about a year ago and I can hardly get around anymore.
Pete's (my fiance) sister just keeps telling me that Medicaid could take up to three years for them to approve me and then after that I gotta go thru the surgery process, it's just so overwhelming and frustrating. Everytime I get that response from his sister I just want to scream. I know this is going to be a long hard road I don't need her to remind me at every turn. I'm sorry, I'm just a bit discouraged this evening and I'm so excited to find you all who are such kindred spirits and know what I'm going thru.
The dr who did my faux surgery gave me the excuse that he didn't have the correct instruments to be able to reach thru my belly wall to my stomach. Which I think is either a bunch of BS or he was a horrible dr because he saw me and felt my belly several times before my surgery was even scheduled. Oh well, I guess I just need to look forward although that experience will always haunt me.
I'm sorry for rambling on but can you all tell me what the guidelines are for surgery thru PA Medicaid? I'm assuming 6 months dr supervised diet, psychologist, and so forth I was just hoping you could give me some insight.
Thank you all again so very much for your support. :)
