Question for our EMT's

Thank you Pam.  I think my new one is going to be the bracelet.  I ended up in a heated discussion with the person at medic alert, she insisted that putting allergic to heparin was more important that putting HIT on it.  I told her politely that we'd need to end the conversation for now and when I cooled down I'd call back and hoped to God I ended up with a different operator on the other end.

I do see what you mean about the other stuff looking too much like jewelry - I want mine to be functional for what it's meant to do - not look pretty....

OK so I just talked to one of my docs. Iwas unaware...but apparently HIT does not automatically mean allergy to heparinshe wants to know if you "just" had HIT or ifyouwereALDO dx w an allergy? She says 9 outta 10 times w a hx of HIT you can get heparin in the future with no adverse reactions....so perhaps if u do have a true allergy maybe that is most important? Hmm

I was diagnoised with HIT.

I was advised by my hematologist and the guys he sent me to for a second opinion when he wanted to prove I could have WLS, both told me to always let medical professionals know I have HIT and tell them I am allergic to Heparin.  My hematologist said when they tested my blood the last time and put it in a tube with heparin it globbed up so it's just better to tell them I have an allergy to it that way no one gives it to me "just in case"  My hematologist believes in time I will be ok to have heparin but until he makes that determination he'd prefer to notify of the HIT diagnosis and say allergy to heparin.  Does that make sense?

Yea...that makes sense.  Speaking of sense, glad you were able to make out what my last post said.  My iphone and I do not agree on this website...and I didn't realize all the damn typos until I read it here on my computer!

Based on that....maybe I would put down allergy to heparin instead of HIT.  Based on the fact that he doesn't want you to have it at all and my er doc said that ppl do get heparin after HIT.....Sorry if I confused the situation even more!

I'm pretty good at figuring out what's been typed when there are typos.  My daughters perfer texting to talking on the phone so my mind has become very quick in figuring out what has been typed :-)

You didn't confuse a thing as always you ask great questions - a sign of a great nurse & medical professional!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bracelet, necklace.... I don't see much of a difference.  Larry is right though, I don't go through wallets, so don't bother with that.

To echo what Pam said though...go with the standard silver and red.  They stick out and if I see something like that, I immediately recognize it.

I used to be an EMT and am now a motorcyclist like you.  I wear a bracelet, it is very nice.  I got it at LaurensHope.com.  They have many different styles and I love the hemetite and stearling one my son gt me as a Christmas present.  He collects rocks & minerals, so the hemetite reminds me of him.
