Question for our EMT's

I have a question that is probably self evident but here goes anyway.

As you all know Gene & I travel a lot on the Harley.

Due to medical conditions I have Medic Alert., (I have HIT, allergic to Heparin, diabetes, and the newest RnY)

When riding what do you suggest is the best piece of jewley to have.  I currently have a watch and my card.  I need to get a new tag because the watch lists that I'm on Cumadin which I no longer take.  I want to get another form of tag but not sure if a bracelet, necklace, or the shoe tag is the best way to go.

Those of you that scrap those of us off the blacktop if we are ever in an accident and survive enough for medical attention - what is the best tag for your purposes??????

Thanks in advance for your professional opinion.

I'm not an EMT but a former vol fireman. I found the plain silver dog tags or bracelet with the red medic alert symbol on one side the easiest to quickly identify.

Thank you seems that the bracelet got the most votes.

Hey there - just asked Larry - He said bracelet first, then a necklace - and you are in his local too - so I would go with that!  He had told me on numerous occassions that he NEVER has time to look in someone's wallet for a card - and he has just told me he wouldn't even know to look for a shoe tag.  Hope that helps!

Thank you Steffi.  Is Larry stationed up on Bustleton Ave just a little ways up from Grant?

Looks as if the bracelet is the one to go with, has the most positive answers from what I can see so far.  I'll just have to wear it backwards so I don't have a funny tan line around the tag portion, just a small line where the chain part is.....

I would suggest a bracelet then necklace as well also....also, many of the newer cell phones have apps where you can download medical history apps as well....many emergency medical services are now trained to look at a person's cell phone to see if they have listed I.C.E which is in case of emergency or the medical histories on the cells....hope this helps!

Thank you Jackie.  Those apps things are nice if one has a phone that will support it.  I use my phone strictly for making calls to either my hubby or MIL, don't use it for anything else unless there is an emergency.  I have an older phone not able to use apps with it.

I have a bracelet I got at the Medicalert website where I have my emergency contacts and medical information in a database for the ER to obtain using my number on my bracelet.

I need to get a smaller one, because mine got to big after my surgery.

thank you Trish.  I have the watch, which we ordered after I got the blood clots and was diagnoised with HIT.  Like you all my emergency contact info is in the medic alert database as is my doc.

Former EMT and current RN (who still needs to look for that stuff when we have ppl come in by car who aren't conscious, which, absolutely does happen)

Yup - bracelet first, necklace second.  The plainer the better - silver with red.  There are lots of ones out there now that look "pretty" and like jewlery - but that's the problem.  It looks like jewlery and we (or at least me) don't look at it.

Happy riding!  Oh - and to save room - you can just put HIT on it, you don't have to put HIT and allergic to heparin.  It's synonomous.
