I AM FURIOUS!!

As much as I didn't want to tell my employer about my surgery, I knew I had too.  No problem. They are working with me.  I have regular customers that I deal with everyday.  I see them maybe once a year.  So my intention was to just tell them I am taking a few weeks off for a medical procedure and that my supervisor would be handling their shipments while I am out.  Today I find out that not only my supervisor but my branch manager told one of my customers that I would be out for a medical leave AND they told them what surgery I'm having!!!!  Are you #$%^ kidding me!!!  The only reason I found out is because this customer just returned from her one week vacation so she called me to get caught up.  She started asking me questions about the surgery and asked me if I was nervous.  Totally caught me off guard.    I have to calm down before I say anything to either of them.  I have to tell them that what they did was a total violation of my privacy and against HIPPA laws.  I love my job but what they did was absolutely WRONG!!!

Thanks for letting me vent.

That is pretty bad. I would call HR and find out what your rights are. They dont even have the right to ask you what kind of surgery you are having much less tell your customers

Id be furious too!!!  Thats bull****!!  Im a non-teller as well and if anyone ran thier mouth about me there would be hell to pay!  I just hope it was an innocent slip and they werent being f-ing gabby.  Thats one thing I would find out.  Not to add to it for you but if they told one person....  You should ask who else they told.  Im so sorry this happened to you.  Good idea getting your breath before confronting them.  If you told them this was a private matter they have really blown it.  Good luck and thanks for coming here to vent.

There is always someone who runs their mouth.  I did not tell people like "friends of friends" and such but on NY Eve the year we were in the 6 month pre-op program my friend was telling people at her party.  I took her aside and told her I am not making it public, that she knew because she was a good friend.  It's so wrong of people to tell.  Now that I am so far out when people ask "how did you do it"  I tell them because I don't have to hear the nay sayers since I am standing in front of them a small size 6!!  But, for sure talk to them because they need to know that is not right.

Cyd,
I am sorry that your employer told your customers about your decision to have WLS. I would be furious as well nobody has a right to violate your privacy and it is illegal and that is the reason there are HIPPA laws in place. Please vent away. I told my husband not to "out" me in front of people I did not want knowing that I had the surgery this included my extended family so only my immediate family knew nobody else knew. Now that I am a little futher out I have no problem telling them how WLS has changed my life and I did it for me nobody else. {{{Hugs}}}

People comment on my over 100 pound weight loss and attribute it to my WILLpower, but it is my WANTpower: I WANT to be thin and healthy more than anything else!

That was just plain wrong on your employer's part!!  Even if you didn't tell them not to tell anyone, they shouldn't have been telling people.  I would let them know that it upset you and ask them not to tell anyone else.

How long have you lived in Clifton Heights?  I lived there for 16 years, then Aldan for 5 years.

Thanks so much for the support on my ranting!!

I would go to HR with a letter and find out if you can report the blabbermouth to some type of labor board but unfortunately the damage is done so I would just after filing the complaint sure I would be on the warpath but just go on with your surgery and chanel your energy on that not that I am making light of your feelins I would be pissed too but it happened and your surgery and recovery is so much more worth worrying about then those people who suffer from VD (verbal diareah) some people just don't know when to shut TFU and we are not going to change that.  Its HR's responsibility to say something to them and if you say something to those big mouths it will in my opinion even though they created it make it a tough work enviorment for you and they are the ones who should be ashamed of themselves but people like that rarely are.  Anyway your results will speak for themselves and be amazing.  Cyd good luck on your new journey and wish you the best.  Welcome.

So yesterday, before I left work, I sent my supervisor an email and copied in our branch manager.  Oh, btw, I found out from another manager that it was my supervisor who blabbed and that our branch manager probably doesn't even know what he did.  Well he does now!  I told my supervisor that this surgery was my personal choice.  I chose to tell the people I work with because they would have figured it out anyway.  I also mentioned I had no intention of telling any of my customers since I don't see them face to face.  Also told him that what he did was a complete invasion of my privacy and I'd appreciate it if he didn't mention it to anyone else outside of our office.  So we'll see what today brings!

Thanks so much to all of your for your kind words and support.  It's greatly appreciated!!

Not only wrong but COMPLETELY illegal.  ILLEGAL

I have been out of the loop so I'm not quite sure why you needed to tell your employer what surgery you were going out for - by law they can't ask.  They can't even ask why you are out sick for a day or two, let alone a medical leave.

Good move on reporting it in a sense....Just don't let it go with "seeing where it goes" and playing nice nice by asking them to not mention it if you don't think that will work.  It's not so much about the surgery as it is the violation.
