What was that all about?

I'm 3 weeks out and back to work for two weeks.Today, I made a protein shake with the same protein I've been using since before surgery with 5 ounces of skim milk and a few ice cubes. The only thing I did different today is put it in the freezer for about an hour before drinking it as I've been having trouble with all of the air bubbles. I was hoping the bubbles would go away! Well it worked! The bubbles went away and I was able to sip it down pretty quickly. It has been taking me almost an hour to drink one that I blend. Shortly after I was done, I felt a little light headed, slightly nausous, and felt my heart pounding. I laid down for a bit (30 minutes - an hour) and felt better.

Did I drink it too fast? Isn't this what dumping feels like? What was going on? Help me figure out my signs so I can learn from them :)

sounds like dumping to me. My guess would be the milk. I hate to say but try it again. If it happens again then it's the milk. Many of us become lactose intolerant post-op. You can try making your shakes with lactaid, soy or almond milk.  You could have also drank it too fast and maybe it was too cold. Sometimes pouches can be prissy! For about the first year I couldn't drink water plain - not hot, not cold, not room temp. If I would put lemon juice or a flavor packet in it I was fine. Strange how the body works.

Hope that this helps!

So dumping can occur for a variety of reasons? I thought dumping was only related to sugar content.

I don't think its lactose intolerance because I have been fine with cheese and yogurt. I have also been fine with these protein shakes previously. I just had to drink them slow due to all the bubbles! Although almond milk sounds tasty!

Do people become lactose intolerant right away after surgery or over time?

Every little bit helps! Thank you!!!

Since the only variable is the temperature and speed at which you drank it, my guess is actually that you simply drank it too fast.  You're still REALLY early out and your pouch isn't healed.  Cold can cause muscles and things to spasm and combined with drinking it more quickly than you're used to (which leads to taking in more air), your pouch likely just kind of "spasmed" and led you to feel that way until it could relax.

As Liz said - try it again the same way, but sip it a lot more slowly.  It should be taking you about 20 minutes at this point to drink a protein shake.

If you're on purees, you can also blend other things into your shake which will lessen the air bubble issue - like a frozen half banana and/or some frozen UNsweetened strawberries.  They will make the consistency more like a thick milkshake, which will slow down your eating of it, too.  And they're really yummy that way!

Good luck!

My one and only dumping episode was from a protein shake - same one I had used often, and even since with no problem. You are lucky it passed relatively quickly - I was curled up on the bathroom floor for a couple of hours, then had to slap for a couple more.

I called Dr. P and she said it could be lactose induced, because I had waited till late morning to have breakfast. It hit my system like a ton of bricks that one time, but I am not lactose intolerant. My guess is that drinking too fast could send your system into flip-flops.

Hopefully it won't happen to you again!

It could be that you drank it too fast or it could be the milk.  I occasionally dump on protein shakes...no rhyme or reason.  I go in cycles where milk bothers me.  As far as the bubbles...you may be blending it too long.  You may want to try mixing your shakes with water or crystal light to see how you do with them that way.

I find that if I eat something to fast, even this far out, it slightly mimics dumping as in the heart rate and nausea.  However, true dumping, is much more severe, normally assosciated with cold sweats, vomiting or dry heaving, and lasts longer.

It definately sounds like you drank it to fast.  Take it a bit slower and see how it goes.
