Psych evaluation

Hi everybody!

I'm fairly new at this whole process and am going through the education classes prior to surgery. My next step is to make an appointment with the phychiatrist to have my psych evaluation. My question to you all is, what kind of questions does he/she ask you?  I never had a psych evaluation before.

Thanks,
Michele

Hi Michele - I don't have an answer to your question as I was already being seen by a Psychologist for three years prior to my surgery, however, I wanted to welcome you to this process.  Don't be shy - come around and ask tons of questions!

And...on a completely different note - I am ALREADY impressed with your usage of the smileys! :)

My psychological evaluation was like a discussion. He asked some background questions (family history, education, work, etc.) and then got into the surgery issue.

He verified that I had support for my surgery decision at home and that I understood the lifetime commitment requried. We talked about nutrition and exercise, and my willingness to follow the plans.
He asked about how I came to the decision to have surgery, and a little about my diet history.

He shared a number of possible aspects of the surgery that I should be aware of (food aversions, depression symptoms) - in the event of those, i was advised to see a psychologist immediately.

Many psychologists also administer the MMPI, which is a lengthy (500-600 questions) multiple choice assessment of your personality. I did not have to do this, though.

I was nervous, but it wasn't a bad experience!

Thank you, Lynn. You have been very helpful. I'm just a little nervous having never vistited a phychologist before.

hi michele,
i didn't have a doctor of my own, so i went to the one the barix clinic recommended. she asked about me,and my family. She asked what i knew about the surgery. what i knew about the recovery time. the food restrictions and exercise that would be required. and if i had any fears about thisprocedure. they just want to make sure you know what your are getting into and if you have support and and the determination to follow through, that's all.

Hi Michele,

My experience was much the same as Lynn's.  It was basically a discussion, not a "therapy" session if you will.  My background,  my family background, my knowledge of the surgery, etc.  It took about 30 mins I guess in total and wasn't to bad at all!

Good luck, sounds like you are doing well the beginning processes!

Pam

I didn't have to have a psych eval for my surgery.  Sorry I can't help you!
