Running???

I am looking for a website where I can get some guidance for a schedule to be able to rain for a marathon.  Yes I can't even believe I am entertaining the idea of doing this.  I don't even want to really tell you that I am thinking of doing this so I can enter the Disney half Marathon next Oct., because if I cant do it, it will be like I am a failure. (I don't want to embarrass myself)  I will need to find a partner, as I know that I can not do the whole thing on my own.  ( I am trying to give my daughter the hint, but she is really trying to ignore it as she does not think she can do it either.)  So I guess I am officially looking for a partner, if I find one, that will be enough for me to make a full commitment.  Thanks for any information you could help with.

Aaahhhhh - this is something I know a lot about!!

Try:

runnersworld.com   -> go to the training button and there are training schedules for all race distances

or

coolrunning.com   -> training plans

or

jeffgalloway.com   -> training

Good Luck!  As soon as I am cleared I will start my training for the 2011 Princess 1/2 in Disney!

Don't know where you are physically but many on the board started here:   http://c25k.com/

Jen and Teresa do organized runs, maybe they'll chime in.  Here's another site that might be helpful:  http://www.marathonguide.com/races/home.cfm  and I've checked with a friend I work with that runs 5-15ks almost weekly and she recommended the following sites in the area as having good postings http://www.pretzelcitysports.com/   and http://www.runccrs.com/Race%20Calendar.htm   Trainers could be found through them too probably.

These are Philly biking routes but maybe running routes too?  http://www.mapmyfitness.com/find-ride/united-states/pa/-phil adelphia-

Good Luck to you!!

Just make sure you take your rest days and don't increase your mileage or speed to quickly.  I did.  Now I am sidelined.

Hi Ena,

Good for you!  What a great goal!
I am still pre-op, but 2 years ago I trained (at 280 lbs) and DID a walking half-marathon in New Orleans with Team in Training.  Team in Training is part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  I trained with them for a few months and did some fundraising.  Once you raise the required amount they pay your way to go and participate in the marathon.  I know they always do the Disney marathon, and they have great trainers.  They will take you from the couch to the marathon!

Check them out, I had a great experience witht hem.

Good luck,
Deb

Thanks Deb.  I sure hope I can go through with this.  I will be taking my time in building endurance and distance for sure.  I am already hearing that I am to "frail" to do this.  ( my husband can be so negative)  I will make sure to get the clearance for the cardio Dr before I start anything more than the walking part.  I will have two more birthdays under my belt by next October, which will put me at 62.  It is just something that I want to do, don't care if I am the last one in, just to cross the finish line will be a major accomplishment for me.
Thanks Ena

Ena, you are right,  I was the NEXT to last person to finish that half-marathon I walked!  The police cars were almost touching my butt for several miles, but I did it.  I cried tears of joy at having done this, it was an amazing feeling.  I saw several people drop out along the way, the police said we had to stay in front of their cars or we had to drop out.  No one told me in training that there would be a time limit, at that weight I couldn't go very fast.  Be forewarned, I was told Disney is the most strict about finishing on time because they want to get the parks open as early as possible.

I am hoping to be able to RUN at least a half marathon at some point after surgery.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Ena,

I'm so excited to hear you say this, because I'm working toward doing the same one!  (next october, disney here we come!!!)

Don't let anyone tell you that you CAN'T... you can set your mind to it and even if you walk the darned thing you will still have accomplished it!

My nephew, Kevin, inspired/challenged me into doing it... so we're now working toward it (he's in Boston), and have gotten my one daughter involved (the other one is "thinking" about it), at least one of the boyfriends, my sister in law, and now a few people on this board.  You will NOT be alone down there!

I've found www.nikerunning.com to be a great site with training videos, training plans, playlists, and a lot more.  In addition to some of the other sites out there.  Sometime around next spring, it will be ideal for me to find a running coach near me and do a few sessions with them, and/or do a few shorter runs in the area (5K and 10K) to prepare.

YOU GO!!!!

Just wanted to say congrats.  And you would NOT be a failure for ANYTHING...the mere fact you are thinking about it, and attempting it makes it a success in and of itself.....but I know you'll be able to do it REGARDLESS.  CONGRATULATIONS!!!
