The decision is in; NO RnY Surgery for me

Today I have completed my journey to receive final approval for Gastric Bypass surgery.

My Hematologist and RnY surgeon have finally had their consult to discuss my case. I spoke with Dr. Kowalski (surgeon) earlier this morning.
No bariatric surgery for me.

I am borderline positive for HIT (Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia). Dr. Kowalski stated he did not feel comfortable doing the surgery, nor will any other surgeon in his opinion due to this "allergy" to Heparin. Dr. Kowalski explained the RnY procedure to Dr. Leighton (hematologist) and this elective surgery is not something I should proceed with. During the surgical procedure the surgeon's use Heparin throughout the surgery. Presently I am borderline but with the onslaught of all the heparin used in the surgery I could end up having a severe reaction because the antibodies are in my system.

I'm really bad at the exercise thing. I do love to walk so with the weather getting nicer it's time to start my walks again at lunch time. I have to make up my mind to stop putting my homework ahead of my health and just do what is needed for my health.

I am excited to begin this new journey that Gene and I are now beginning.

Ida - I am so sorry to hear you are not able to have the RNY, but grateful that they discovered this before you were on the OR table - so there is always a bright spot somewhere. What about the lapband? Would that surgery be as invasive that they would have to use the Heparin? I'm just asking because I honestly don't know, and lapband might possibly be an option?

Yes, I asked and the answer is also No LapBand due to the heparin use during that also.
