dry skin?

OK so I have terribly dry skin on my entire body and it is starting to drive me crazy! Not to mention hurt! There are areas where it is so dry if I itch I bleed. I get in plenty of fluids and take all my vitamins. My mom suggested that maybe it is because of our low fat diets? Anyone else experience this? I'll bring it up to Dr Brader next week while i am out there. I better start making a list! lol

Oh and I use an Aveeno lotion as reccomended by my dermatologist. I have super sensitive skin and can't use anything with perfumes or dyes.

Thanks all!

Liz

PS - have I mentioned that i HATE winter?! lol

I've had years like that too, Liz.  The only thing that worked on my face for the past 2 years (but so far this year I'm ok...) was Mary Kay's night time dry skin moisturizer.  $$ but worth it so my skin didn't look like the desert.

A girlfriend of mine...her daughter (about our age, just a little younger) had very similar problems.  There was only one cream she could use that actually worked....of course I dont' remember the name of it...I will email her and ask her...I know it was over the counter but was hard to find.

And yes, perhaps the low fat diet has something to do with it - but truth be told - most of the time we are getting fat from somewhere in our diets so I'm not sure that would be the absolute cause.

Hi LIz,
I had it so bad last winter that my fingers were bleeding.
I now take vitamin A daily. I also alternate between Omega 3 fish oil and flax seed oil every other day.
I also use Yu-Be hand cream in the winter. I get it from Drugstore.com.
So far so good this winter - but I know we are still a long way from spring.
Hope some of this may help you too.

Every day before I get dressed I lotion up my arms and legs with Aveeno lotion - I love it - it doesn't have a scent and its not greasy at all. I also keep a tube on my desk because my hands get so dry at work from handling paper and washing them so much. This year they seem a bit drier than normal, but with as cold as its been I know we're running the heat a lot more here and at home and that is definitely drying. We put a small humidifier in our bedroom because as night I would get so closed up from the dryness - the humidifier defnitely helps.

As far as my face goes I use different products. I got serious turkey neck when I started losing so much weight so I 'invested' in Strivecton cream for my eyes and neck - can't tell much difference in my eye area but it is definitely helping the turkey neck, so I will invest in another jar of that soon - its not cheap but that is worth it. And otherwise I just use a moisturizer morning and night - whatever I find that I like at the moment.

But if your arms and legs and really dry try the Aveeno - I buy it at Costco or the Christmas Tree Shoppe - its a lot cheaper than the drug stores and like I said it seems to work really well.

Liz-

I have been dealing with dry skin for the past 4 months. TERRIBLY!!

I went to my dr he said get aveeno or lubriderm. didnt help. I ended up at the dermatologist and he gave me a script and that didnt help. I actaully have tried like 5 different things and ended up using the vaeline intentise care scrip strength and it has been the only thing that has worked!!

And I also started taking more showers and less baths. I started using a different body wash because i was using dove and i think that dried my skin out as well. I now use the lever 2000 and it seems to have made a big difference. I hope that you find something soon.

The low-fat diet is what did it for me, never had the issue before.  Once in a while an "area" (like my arms or legs) would be a little dry but not like now.  I take flax seed oil twice a day and have nuts, which both can help.  But the best thing I did is to make a "moisture trapper" for the shower.  I take abou 8 oz of sesame oil (it's very light) and add a small amount of almond (1 oz) oil.  I then mix in my favorite essential oil (usually about 10-15 drops - lavendar, lemon-grass, rosemary or a mix thereof).  I put it all in a small plastic bottle that CVS sells for like 99 cents.  I shake it up.  Then after I do my showere deal I use it on the dryest areas and become a "moisture trapper."  Doing it will in the shower will help "trap" the water in and the oil is absorbed.  You pat dry, DO NOT rub or tough roughly when your skin is dry.  Voila!  My skin is back to it's normal (mostly, except that it SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgggGGGGssss a lot now) self and it's stopped flaking.

Well thanks everyone! I might have to try that concoction of Keri's! I too have used every lotion known to man and the Aveeno is the only one that doesn't give me hives! I have terribly sensitive skin. I was thinking about the gloves - but honestly the worst part is my legs!

Thanks for all the advice as always!

I just have this really strange skin irritation (sp?) around my ankles. it only hapens every once in a while and has happend in the summer too.

i see my primary soon and am requesting bloodwork...i wonder if it has anything to do with vitamin levels.

it gets so itchy and i scratch till it bleeds...then it's even more painful. burns like hell!!!

good luck with yours : )
