Hi everyone. I am celebrating the small victories. I have been faithful to my treadmill and walking every other day for a week now.  I have not been eating all the "right" foods but at least I am eating normal or smaller portions. I haven't done any kind of regular exercis ie: walking for about 2 1/2 years. Our YMCA membership starts next month but I wanted to start now. I am not doing alot at one time but at least I am doing This was kind of the last personal goal I had before I have my surgery, to get started on a fittness schedule. So far, so good. One day at a time, and my favorite Slow and steady wins the race. Hey I want to ask my doc but maybe someone here can give me some general idea how long do I have to wait post op before getting back into walking and working out? Thanks ya'll  You are my heros.

Your doctor will give you more precise information, but you should be able to get up and take small walks in the hospital, and incrmentally increase your distance upon discharge.

Probably will have to wait a week or two to get on the treadmill though.

The more you're on your feet, the better!

YAY you DEFINITELY!!!  That's awesome!  It's the one area I am decidedly week in.  :0(  I'm working with myself but not on any kind of schedule yet.  So I am thrilled for you!!  And proud of you!!!!!  Keep working it because you're right, it's a journey, not a destination.

Good for you on starting a work out routine!  My Dr wanted me walking right away, obviously don't over do it, just short walks!  My Dr wanted me up and walking the halls in the hospital right away too, but I didn't get up until the next morning!

Keep up the great work!!

You've got to celebrate whenever you can!!! I did 4 days of exercise 2 weeks ago and was thrilled.  I thought ok, here goes.. I'm going to do this every week.  Then, I got sick and I haven't felt better yet.  I'm going to the dr. tomorrow, so hopefully, I'll feel better and be able to get up off my butt even if it's just to walk a little in the neighborhood.

Congrats to you for meeting your first personal goal!!!

Taking small steps and conquering them one at a time is one of the only ways to do this.  Congrats and keep that part up.  Make this a part of your life, no excuses.  Because trust me....one excuse follows another one WAY to easily.

As far as post surgery goes....I was up walking the halls within 3 hours of me being woken up from surgery.  My surgeon wanted me walking as much as I could tolerate at home.  I started with walking around the house when I first got home at each commercial break.  By the end of that first day home, I also took two 10 minute walks outside with DH. In the following days I was walking at least 10-15 minutes 4-6 times a day outside.

And by my two week appointment I was back at the gym doing the treadmill and elliptical.  I think it was by week 3 or 4 that she wanted me doing core, back, abs, and weights again.

The more you walk after surgery - even if for 5 mins at a time - the better you will heal.  That a long w/ deep breathing...
