food and drink

Hello everyone.  I am about 4 weeks post-op and I have a question about food and drink.  At what point can I try veggies again? I am dying for some stir fry with chicken.  I only use non starchy veggies and I do use frozen veggies.  As far as what you can drink, can you ever have diet soda again? I am doing water and some fat free milk right now, but some days I need a change.  I am still having trouble with the protien shakes, they seem so thick.  I am trying to keep up my protein intake with other things.  On another post someone told me that you can put protein into soup ect. What is that, and how do I get it?

Thanks,

As far as veggies go I think that you can start back on them once you are on "regular" food but I would confirm with your surgeon.

AS far as drinks you should avoid anything carbonated. What about decaf iced tea? crystal light?
Hope this helps!

Liz

The veggies should wait until "regular food" for me - that was six weeks per my surgeon.  And I would start with cooked veggies and maybe more cooked than a stir fry would offer.  Any new foods, I found, best to be started mushy or soft stage type style and work my way up from there.

Liz is also right about the carbonation - you should stay away from it period - but definately this early out.  IT can cause stretching and what not of the pouch and you don't want to possibly have any problems with the integrity of the suture line.  Not to mention, it can make you uncomfortable.  That being said...I am 14 1/2 mos out....and have I had diet soda, yes.  In fact I had one tonight.  And I am super gassy and feel it moving all around me.

Protein shakes - have you tried mixing them with water instead of milk?  That will make it less thick.

And as far as adding powder to soups...get any unflavored protein powder (I believe new whey is one of them) and add it.  But...and this is a BIG but....the soup cannot be HOT....luke warm or warm only...hot liquids congeal the protein powder into this nasty congealed mess that is just not appetizing.  Also unjury (I believe only available online) makes a chicken broth flavored protein powder.  Directly post op I used to LOVE the stuff and drank it often. I recently got a container of it from a friend who didn't like it and I thought I would keep it on hands for days when I am to busy at work and can't get all my meals in...but I hate the stuff now.  Not to sure why....If you would like me to send it to you, I gladly will, just PM me your address.
