Need to get back on track and NOT diet!

Hi All and Happy New Year...

I'm hoping for suggestions on getting back on track without falling into a panic and triggering that diet mentality that set me up to gain weight to begin with.

I was 2 lbs from goal when I got sick this summer and the meds and lack of exercise began to interfere.  I gained, then lost, then began a cycle of gaining and losing.  Unfortunately, the last month or so, I've been gaining and not losing.  I'm now 15 lbs from goal and the scale is not moving.  I know why - I'm eating all the wrong things.  I'm not a stress eater or sad eater...I'm a celebratory eater!  Food is part of the fun!

I've no doubt I can and will get to goal in the next couple months.  That's not my worrry.  My worry is how easy it was to fall into old patterns and bad habits!  My further worry is that I will give in to panic about the weight gain and begin to diet...I started dieting as a pre-schooler and it screwed me up in so many ways.  I swore I would never do it again.  But the temptation is there.

Any suggestions or first-hand accounts on dealing with this would be appreciated.

(cross-posting this for as many suggestions as I can get!)

Lisa

I would suggest starting with the 5 day pouch test (google it) to reset your pouch, many have chosen that method when they have gotten off track.  Other suggestions would be some form of exercise that you can do and maintain with regularity, as well as attending some sort of support group if you don't already do so, it's a way to get suggestions and keep us accountable by showing up and participating in the solution of post-WLS life.  You know you are not alone and many of us have these issues, as I've heard often enought, the surgery was done on our stomachs, not our brains and therein is where we need constant reinforcement of what is necessary to continue "successing". . .

Wishing you the best as you get back on track. . .

Best wishes, Laureen

Thanks, Laureen.  I will look up the pouch test and give it a try.  And get back to one of my support groups.  I used to go to a couple, but at one, everybody continually talks all at once and that just leaves me feeling aggravated!

Lisa,

We have groups at Barix 3x a month, don't know what your schedule is like, but the meetings are open to anyone needing support, not just Barix patients and are not a free for all, but well facilitated by group leaders. . . the schedule is:

1st Saturday of every month, from 12 noon until 4 p.m., this is relatively new and we've been breaking down to different stages post-WLS and also have a pre-op and lap band group, though the format this month, due to the fact that we are expecting a lighter than usual attendance due to holidays, will be different.  It meets from 12 to 2, then a 1/2 hour break, after which we return to group.  Some people can't be or stay for whole thing, some part is better than none.

2nd Tues of each month, 7 p.m. to about 8:30, is pre-op, though post-ops can attend, however, the focus is on pre-op issues

3rd Wed of each month, 7 p.m. to about 8:30 - post-op, also a lap band group meets if there are banders in attendance and someone is there to lead it

These meetings are facilitated with emphasis on support, sometimes a topic specific focus or guest, as in plastic surgeon; last month we had a personal trainer and we have been fortunate in that there is usually a nutritionist in attendance to address any questions you might have relating to nutritional needs.

There are also postings here from people who host groups in their homes, one is a cooking group that Liz does, so there check in and see what you can fit.

Best wishes for your continued journey. . .  hope to see you somewhere soon. . .

Laureen

Laureen, thanks very much for all the info.  I will consider the support groups...I plan to be reading the forum much more than I have for a few months too!

Lisa - Like Laureen said, and I agree, that the 5 day pouch test is a great way to get back on track. Infact I believe that I will be doing it myself here in the next week. I am almost 2 years out - just behind you and about 22 pounds from goal. I had a few set backs along the way but have never really gained - just maintained and I am not ready to maintain at this weight! I want to be to my Dr's goal of 170 pounds. We know what we need to do - eat right and move - now we just have to do it!!

I'm with you and WE CAN DO THIS!!!

Thanks, Liz.  I'll give the pouch test a shot and I wish you all the best with it as well!

Hi Lisa,
I know how you are feeling. I am 3 years out and see the scale going up instead of down. I know my biggest downfall is grazing at night. Not getting in the appropriate amt of protein either I think really hurts.
Next shopping trip I will try with the Muscle Milk, or other protein drinks and see if that helps...Along with exercise.....I need to get my butt in gear....
Good Luck

Yes, I agree that not focusing on getting enough protein is really hurting.  That fix is at the top of my nutrition list.  Thanks.

Lisa,

Your mentality is already in the spot it needs to be,which is wonderful.  And although 15 pounds is definately "fixable", it is also a time to realize what road you are headed down and able to be fixed.  It's that "fear" that helps keep us on track!

You've already got some great advice and am sure your action plan will fall into place soon enough!!
