Hello everyone!

We did have a better night last night, although I was still up at midnight and at 3 a.m.  But no nausea and no horrible pain, so that's a win for me!

I am ever so upset with hospice/Medicare.  I guess it's really Medicare, or rather, some STUPID BUREAUCRAT in Washington who is making all the medical decisions based on the $$$ bottom line, rather than the patients' needs.  The one pain med that actually seems to help Butch the most is NOT on the formulary list for hospice!  Because why?  It's too damn expensive.  All you hear when you start interviewing these hospices is how they are going to make sure your loved one is comfortable and not in pain, etc.  Then they exclude one of the best pain meds!

So we are going to try one more of the "cheaper" drugs tonight, but if that doesn't work for him, I'm going to have to self-pay for the Oxycontin each month.  Which I'm more than willing to do because 1) I don't want my husband to suffer, and 2) because I am fortunate enough to have the funds to do so, but GEEZ!  It's $1500 a month!

So I'm not a very happy camper today.  I'm pretty damn upset with the whole effin' system!

Anyway, Butch is having a better day today.  He got up and wanted a bath and a shave, then asked for pancakes and bacon for breakfast.  And he's eating a bite of vanilla pudding right now.  Thank God.  If he can just eat a little more every day, he will feel better and begin to regain some of his energy.  And if we can keep his pain under control, he will have better days.

So, I bit the bullet this morning and ordered the outdoor foam cushions for my new outdoor furniture.  It was expensive stuff!  But I tried to order the best type available: 6" thick, dry-fast, mildew inhibitor, etc.  It was crazy the price spread on that stuff.  Some e-stores I checked had it for over $1000!  But some were more reasonable.  I finally ordered from one place for about $400 total.  This is good.  Between the cost of the furniture, the fabric and now the cushions, I'm still right at $800 for a 3-seater outdoor sofa and an armchair.  I am WAAAAY ahead of the game as far as the commercial patio furniture stores go.  The 3 seater sofas there all run $2000 and up!

Just call me Ms. DIY.  LOL!

You know, I never could eat those turkey legs or sausage on a stick or any of that other "fair food", even before I had WLS.  Just something about all that smoky flavor and grease.  Now a funnel cake?  That's an entirely different story!  LOL!

Not sure what I'm going to fix for our dinner tonight.  This weekend the kids will all be here for my birthday celebration.  I'm going to use Butch's smoker and make a small brisket, some ribs, and a big link sausage.  I'll make potato salad and baked beans to go with it.  Benny wants to make my birthday cake.  Isn't that sweet?

Judy, honey, I'm sorry about the surgery verdict.  Geez Louise!  You've been dealing with this problem forever.  Do they think that THIS surgery will finally fix the problem?  I hope so!

I wanted to respond to everyone, but now I can't remember who wrote what.  Sorry.  Sleep deprivation strikes again.

Love you all!

Hello Vickie....I am so sorry that you are getting hassled about that medication for Butch. Can't your doctor send them a note letting them know his condition and this is the only med that has helped. I have had to have had that done myself. I hope you can get it started up again. He deserves some painless days!!!

It does sound like Butch is eating better, I am so happy to hear that!! He can get his strength back up and have more energy for you and the girls.

Your birthday dinner sounds wonderful. You are such a great cook!! Benny wants to make your cake...that is so sweet!!!

Prayers for you and Butch....and lots of love too!!

Love and bushels of hugs.....connie d

Vickie,

I am sorry to hear the problems you are dealing with in regards to Butch's medication/health insurance coverage. We went thru a similar situation when Jim got MRSA IN THE HOSPITAL during his below the knee leg amputation. He had to go on this daily IV antibiotic for 45 minutes a day for a month. The CO-PAY was $1500 A DAY! No way could we afford that on a social worker's salary, and due to his multiple health problems I was never able to afford to put him on my health insurance.

Anyhow, they wrote it off after looking up our a** to make sure we could not afford it, but it was NOT THE TIME to have to deal with such nonsense...just like in your case.

I don't need to get on my platform & offend anyone about the illegals that get access to Medicaid & other government freebies so there is no money for us tax-paying Americans to get what WE need...especially in instances such as yours where the pain & suffering from cancer is off the charts.

I get pissed everytime I hear another example of this...thank God you can afford to 'buy' Butch the relief he needs without mortgaging the farm.

I continue to pray for both of you. It is good news his appetite is returning & he is more himself the past few days.

Kathy

Vickie,

Before you pay OOP for the medication you can APPEAL the decision. Especially if none of the formulary drugs work. You can request a physician AND pharmacist review. Also if you get the meds before the appeal is finished, they should reimburse you if the appeal is decided in your favor.
