I have been looking on the web for this quote all day. I heard it last night o n a episode of Criminal Minds. It caught my attention as so many people like my sister, niece,  nephew and you, dear Connie have pasts that effect them . 

"The past is our definition. We may strive to escape it, with good reason, or what is bad in it, but we will escape it only by adding something better to it."

Connie, i don't know you tat well, but the little i do know is you have added lots of "better"  to your past.
