Ok It Is Saturday
Francine:
My mom is turning 90 this year. Before she fell two Christmases ago and broke her elbow and her pelvis, she was fairly active. She drove to the store, to church, to the library. Went out with her neighbor lady across the alley. Then she broke her elbow when she fell in the basement (my brother lives with her, has done so since he lost his job four years ago. He now has a job, though). They set up a therapist to come in and help work with her on her elbow, a nurse to come in a couple times a week. Then, a week or so later, she fell going into the bathroom and broke her pelvis (my brother was at a part-time job at Kohl's at the time; he had just gotten there and had to turn around and go back home. She was in the hospital, then a rehab center for a couple of weeks. The social worker said she'd need 24/7 care for about a month when she went home. That was a year ago. She still has a caretaker. She refuses to go outside, even on the porch, to sit. She won't even get up to get her own breakfast any more. She says she can't walk because of her arm. Well, you don't walk with your arms.
I know all about falling ... I've done my share of it, too. I've wrecked both my knees and now have replacements; broken ankles, etc. I'm a klutz from the word go. And yes, I understand she doesn't want to go out in the snow. But she won't even go outside when it's nice. My brother had to drag her to her great-grandsons' birthday party last year. She went and had a good time, but she was reluctant to go. She has had physical therapy; well, let me put it this way, her caretakers guide her arm through the exercises. She doesn't really do them herself.
My brother is a saint for putting up with this. You don't offend me at all. My mom has pretty much given up. She complained when we sold her car because there was no way she could drive anymore. But she doesn't even want to go outside at all. She's locked herself up in the house, more or less. She doesn't want to try to get better.
Good Afternoon Carla and OFF,
I left my zoo docent training early today. My back was just killing me, and my heating pad was calling me. I'll make it up.
Today, I handled the armadillo, the ferret, a turtledove, and a legless lizard. I had to wear gloves handling the armadillo. He's very feisty. Then, we went to the rhino barn, learned about them, and got to pet one. I'll post a pick of her on Facebook.
The rest of the evening, I'm resting. My back may feel better later, then I'll tidy the kitchen.
Hugs,
Trish
