I had gastric bypass 6 years ago and reached my goal the first year. I had a wreck and was in a wheelchair for 4 months and then a walker after 4 months after that. Still no weight gain. about 6 months after that I gained 10 pounds and was at a good weight and size. I started gaining and can not get it under control. I have gained 35 pounds in all. I am not as active since the wreck and still have pain and it is holding me back right now. I joined Curves but ended up hurting my shoulder and had to stop for now.  Help! what can I do to get these extra pounds off. Thanks to anyone who can help me or have suggestions for me.

I, like so many others, always start with basics.

Keep a food journal and record not only what you are eating and when but also what is going on during the eating between meals.  I would do the journal for about a week maybe two.

Next, even if you are not as active as you once were, you can still do some movement.  I suggest you start by doing some chair exercises that involve stretching...look up some Yoga movements.  If you can get in and out of the floor, do some leg exercises.

Do some weights and if you don't have weights, fill up two water bottles...start with the 20 oz bottles filled with water and later move to sand.  You can even move up to the larger bottles.  Start doing curls.

Always, always start slow and work up very slowly.  The goal is to increase your movement without hurting yourself but also you want to increase your strength.

If you can walk, do so.  Nothing burns belly fat for us ladies like walking.

If you are home all day, find a hobby that can keep you occupied and satisfied.   Join clubs, volunteer, go to the library.

I hope this helps some.

Yes this does help thanks, It is strange but I know to do these things but I guess I just got lazy and stopped doing the things I know I should. I am starting a walking program on Monday. Starting out just doing what I can and working my way up. I am eating better now and getting back to basics. Thanks for all the information, this really helps. Judy

Hello Judy,

Come October I will be 6 years post-op. . .  I struggled to lose my weight and it took me 18 months to near my personal goal. . .  I was happy with the results. . .  I went to the gym religiously and all was well in my world. . . between years 2 and 3 I gained about 10 lbs., it was good, I looked better and people who mattered and I knew cared, said you look great, more importantly I felt it. . .  then some things happened, not as serious as yours, but I got out of the gym habit and gained another 8 lbs., ok, I told myself, not the end of the world, I know what I need to do, I did it in fits and starts and here I am 30+ lbs. from where I was at 2 years. . .  Jeanne gave you sage advice, it is not easy to lose weight where we are now, but it can be done, the goal is to stick with a program of movement that you can do comfortably, along with eating the way we know we must in order to stop the gain.  I post a thread daily, it's Commitment to Moving. . . another member posts "What are you Eating" . . . we are doing this because we need the support, as well as the accountability.  No one will judge what you do or don't do, we will encourage you and if you need some help, someone here is more than willing to offer it.

You can do this, WE can do this. . .  for many of us, it is easy to fall back in the old patterns. . . changing what we did for the first 40+ or more years, does not occur without sustained and vigorous attention to conscious choices.

Wishing you well...  Laureen

Thank you Laureen, good advice. I am going to work very hard to get these pounds off. My weight came off very easy and I reached my goal but I gained and lost the same 3 pounds over and over again so I stayed about the same. But suddenly I gained. I refuse to gain anymore. In fact I have lost 4 pounds this week. I feel like that is a good start. Thank you so much. Yes we can do this.
