It's starting to become a reality!!

Good afternoon my fellow 50's, I've posted a couple of times and today I talked to the Dr.'s office and they are submitting everything to my insurance company and she felt that everything will be good to go and that we would be able to set a date for my procedure soon.  I can not believe that its finally becoming a reality and to tell you the truth I'm a little scared......not sure why really, mainly worrying will I get all my fluids in, will I get all my vitamins in etc.  I'm doing this to become healthier and to feel better so afraid of the unknown.  I'm hoping that once I get a date set that I'll find others who are scheduled around the same time and we can go through this together.  What do I need to do to prepare for the surgery, what should I take to the hospital.  I'll be having the surgery in a town that is about a 5-6 hour drive from my home, how do I survive the trip home, any suggestions there.  Sorry for all of the questions peeps.  Have a great evening.

When you get approved and get a date, check you surgery month on here and find others having surgery too.

I didn't need to take anything to the hospital.  I did take a robe and PJ bottoms to wear under the gowns.  I did use the robe on one arm and over the other but, couldn't use the pj bottoms as I had a catheter.  The things I used was my chap stick, they did have some for me but, I didn't get my stuff until the second day.  My kindal with head phones.  This had my book, music and sound machine noise.  I was able to get a little sleep this way. Not much as the roomie snored so loud and it wa**** or miss with her cpap machine.

Getting ready for surgery, I had to get all my vitamins and protein shakes pre surgery.  Let us know when you get closer so we can give more help.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

oK, if sharing with roomie, take earplugs...get used to sleeping with them the week before surgery so they are comfy when you really need them....found the wax ones best as moulded best to ears....also sleeping mask, get dark ones from any suitcase/travel gear store....make sure elastic is big enough for comfy wear as if too tight you will not be able to stand them on your eyeballs.... Believe me "deaf and blind" will mean better rest for you in hospital, as nurses will wake you.....when you have to walk or submit to some test: blood, blood pressure, take a pill or injection, whatever....snoring roomie with lots of visitors or screaming add hyperactive kids? You will be safe and in peace....relax, recuperate.

Cathy,

Welcome.   After approval, it will go by very quickly.   Take one day at a time and get ready to watch your body change almost over night.

Good for you Cathy..that is great news!! I pray all goes through without any glitches.

Be sure to take a pillow for in the car. You will want to hold that over your tummy for the ride. The roads can be quite bumpy. Everyone else had pretty much listed everything else.

Good Luck.....love and hugs...connie d

Welcome Cathy-

I am two years out from my surgery.  I agree with the ladies.  Plan on ear plugs and eye mask if your insurance will only pay for semi-private room.  Prepare yourself that you might also have a roommate who can still eat.  I had that the first night.  I finally got out of bed, explained that I'd had 3/4 of my stomach removed and that I'd appreciate it if they didn't do a play by play about the food they were eating.

I live 80 miles from the hospital.  If you're going to have someone with you for a few days post surgery you should have anything to worry about.  You might want to ask the hospital if they have discount rates at local hotels for friends and family and stay one night after your discharge just in case.  My cousin stayed with me for two weeks but I was able to take care of myself pretty much from the first day.  The ride home was uncomfortable a bit because I was feeling a bit bruised.  Make sure you get your pain meds before you start your drive home.  Stop and walk frequently.

Let me know if you have any more questions that you want answered.

Thank you to all that replied and for the helpful information.  As soon as I get my call with my surgery date, I'll post.
