Help. I'm not losing

I had RNY on 10 July.  I feel great.  No pain or anything.

My problem is that I'm starting to gain.  I lost steady while on the pre-op diet and again the first couple weeks but now I'm slowly putting a half a pound or so back every couple days.

What am I doing wrong?  I'm following the diet plan.  I'm not hungry so I have to make myself eat three small meals a day.  I'm getting around 50 grams of protein a day and averaging around 800 calories.  I started going to the gym too.  I'm doing 30 minutes of the "weight loss" program on an elliptical every other day  because I'm just starting out and my knees are bad.

I have an appointment with the dietician next Thursday but I was hoping some one out here in cyber land could help me.  I'm afraid that I'll fail to lose weight after having gastric bypass even though I'm not eating like I used too.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Joy

Hi Joy!

Deep breath, sweetie!  You need to talk to your surgeon or NUT pronto.  This is something that they need to evaluate and assess.  In the meantime, start keeping a food/exercise journal to bring with you to show them.  Best of luck!  Please let us know what they say, okay? And join our daily thread.  We will help you if we can.

When I was three weeks post op, I was only permitted full liquids, meaning protein shakes, sugar free pudding, sugar free yogurt, etc.  I also was required to eat 79 grams of protein a day.  I also had to be caffeine free, and consumer 64 ounces of water, caffeine free, sugar free iced tea or Crystal Light.  I found Isopure protein drinks at GNC.  The Grape Frost tastes like Grape Kool Aid.  It has 40 grams of protein per bottle.  I also use AnyWhey protein powder, to make my smoothies.  I container of Chobani yogurt, a cup of milk, a scoop of AnyWhey, and some frozen blueberries make a 38 gram smoothie.  I put them all in a blender.  I've also mixed the AnyWhey with sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast and 8 ounces of milk, for a 30 gram chocolate drink, or you could use vanilla.

Did your doctor clear you for rigorous exercise so soon?  I wasn't cleared till six weeks post-op.

Find out from the surgeon or nutritionist what your protein and fluid intake should be, and if you should be exercising as rigorously as you are.

Also, hang out here for tons of support.  If you can find a face to face support group, that would be great too.

Hope I helped.  Not sure where you can get AnyWhey.  I got it at the bariatric hospital where I had my RNY

Hugs,

Trish

Thanks.  I'm cleared to eat mechanically soft foods.  I've been keeping a food and exercise diary for months now and I will take it with me.  According to my doctor, the elliptical is a safe exercise for me at this time.

My face to face support folks say that it's just a plateau that comes from my body thinking it's being starved and that it only lasts about a week and then I'll start to drop again.

I'm just worried that I will fail at this too like all the other stupid diets I've been on over the years.  I'm sure I'm over reacting.

Thanks again for all you advice and suggestions.

Thanks!  I think I just needed the reassurance that I wasn't doing anything wrong.

Great, I'm glad you are cleared for the elliptical.  Also, I wasn't paying attention to the time, and realize that by this point in time, I was also at mechanical soft foods.  One great soft food I loved then was microwave refried beans with cheddar cheese.  I'd still have my daily smoothie and my Isopure drink.

Pineview is right.  Increase your protein intake, and make sure your fluids are at least 64 ounces a day.

Also, Vickie is right.  You will hit a plateau quite a few times.  Instead of weighing yourself at home, just wait till you're at a doctor's.  Or weigh one day a week, first thing in the morning.  Also, if the scale is not moving, how are your clothes feeling.  They're still probably feeling looser.

Patience is something we must learn in early WLS recovery.

Hugs,

Trish

How much WATER are you getting.  All our fluid counted including the protein shakes, but 64 oz is the min.  Also I wasn't allowed to start working out until 4 weeks.  Have you been cleared for anything other than walking?  Up the protein as 64 g was our min and 80 was my goal at your point.  At three week I was doing three protein shakes (23g each for 69 g) plus my three "meals" of 1/4 c cottage cheese or yogurt or other such high protein meal.

Oh, did I say WATER kiss

Thanks everyone.  I have been getting my water every day.  And while it's harder to get the protein, I do get at least 50-60.  I'm still drinking at least one Unjury shake a day just to make sure.  I did lose 4/10s of a pound yesterday so I'm feeling better about everything.

And, my clothes do feel loser.  In fact, since this is Friday and a jeans day at work, I'm actually wearing a smaller size.  Some people won't understand but my jeans had been almost too tight and now I'm wearing a size smaller and they are COMFORTABLE.  I'm ecstatic.  I almost cried this morning when I put them on.

Thank all of you for your encouragement and advice.

We all know how you feel.  I have found after I lost the first size the sizes drop faster.  It took me over 50 pounds to do it.  Those bigger sizes sure hold a lot of pounds.
