Hello all,

I'm a newbie and I'm hoping to have my procedure in September, I'm having the RNY.  Sometimes I'm questioning myself if I'm too old to go through this.  I'm 52.  Thought about it over 4 years ago but never pursued it.  I think my biggest fear is the healing part, I know the older you get the longer it takes to heal.  I've had a C-section, and a total Hystorectomy and they weren't too bad so I keep telling my self I can do this, and the benefits will be SO worth the pain that I'll have.  Looking for anyone who is around my age who has recently had the procedure to visit with and follow your progress.  Thanks to any and all that reply.

Hello Cathy and welcome to OFF!

No, you are not too old, which you will certainly discover for yourself in a couple months' time.  I was 54 when I had my RNY.  I am 2 1/2 years out now and I wish I had done it sooner.  You will feel so much better you'll wonder why you waited the 4 years.

Also, are you having your RNY done laparoscopically?  If so, I can almost guarantee that you will have very little pain and a rapid healing time.

Glad to have you drop into our forum.  We post daily.  I invite you to join in our daily thread.  You will find a world of support, guidance, and friendship here.

Hi Cathy, I'm not really in your age range as had my "open" radical hysterectomy at age 52, healed well, and at age 62 had laparoscopic RnY which had me recovering really well, textbook recovery. You are definitely not too old so go for it with an easy mind and heart. You will not regret it. Most RnY is done laparoscopically these days so expect you will too. You will recover just fine!

Hi Cathy and WELCOME    I was 52 when I was banded in '09.  I recovered just fine.  I had the band removed 9/12 and was sleeved 1/13 at 55.  I recovered and healed better faster with the sleeve.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Aloha Kathy, and welcome to this wonderful little family of OFF (over fifty forum) people.

I had to chuckle when you said you were afraid you were too old for RNY at 52. Only chuckling because when I was 63 I had WLS and I weighed 330 lbs. Today, seven years later, I weigh 145 (I'm 5'11") and some consider me skinny. Life made a major change durin g that first two years, and except for a few "stalls" the weight steadily came off, and then kept coming off after I had reached goal.

Just enjoy this fantastic life-changing procedure. You will not regret it.

Aloha nui loa,

I had my RNY done open at 49, six years ago, turned 50 two months later.  I recovered just fine.  16 months later, I had to have an incisional hernia repaired, so the doc reopened me, did a tummy tuck, and repaired it.  Again, I recovered nicely.

I'm scheduled for gall bladder surgery at the end of this month, and it will be done laproscopically.  I have no concerns.

Start taking long walks, as briskly as you can.  Also, start doing deep breathing exercises.  Fill your lungs as deeply as you can, then blow out slowly.  Both times, I had to breath into a thing and keep a little ball elevated for as long as I could.  Most abdominal surgery patients have to.

Focus on all the great things you'll be able to do that you probably can't do now.  My favorite is being able to have the stamina to keep up with my six, four and one year old grandchildren, including kicking the soccer ball around.  I also like that I don't need a seatbelt extender when I fly on an airplane.

Hugs,

Trish

This is all very encouraging to read. I am soon to be 55, and was having similar doubts. I am hopeful for a sleeve in late September.
