Surgery, arthritis, and no more NSAIDS

OMG, Sunday night was the last NSAID I ever get to take and today my arthritis reared its ugly head. It started in my back and within an hour every joint in my body was throbbing.  So I have Tramadol and took a couple of those, but I hate taking these strong drugs.  I also just got a brand new prescription for Butran patches.  I hate to even start those, but may just have to do it.  I guess I am looking for input from those of you that have OA and how great the improvement really was as you lost the weight.  OA is one of the major factors that drove me to this and now I am doubting how much it will help.

Can anyone give me some happy-future thoughts when it comes to losing weight and Osteoarthritis? Please

HUGS...feel bad for you and your pain! Not sure if you thought about SAVELA not sure if I spelled that right or not but it helped me when I was having some pain last year. It works sort of like CYMBALTA and I didn't have the side effects like I had from CYMBALTA. Something for you to ask your dr about.

I quit my job that I had and moved to where I am now and the pain went away as time went on...VICODIN also helped alot. I used to work at BJ's Wholesale Club in the food court on my feet for hours and lifting heavy boxes of food etc....I am no longer doing that and like I said my pain is gone...I do have some arthritis in my back and some in my hips. Right now my hips are screaming and I have no health insurance for the medications...used to get injections also that helped.

Wish I could be more helpful...one thing my pain dr said was to get the weight off it will help more....got down to 170 felt great...now I am back up to almost 200 again and I feel the pain coming back in this weather! Trying to take it off again and not doing so good but will be trying harder after the new year....

Hi Judy,

Thanks for the reply.

It's good to hear getting the weight off really does help.  So sorry to hear you are fighting the weight again.  I haven't heard of the first drug you mentioned and will do some research.

Do take care

Six years ago I was suffering with pain so much in my hip that I couldn't walk without a cane. My life consisted of going to work, going home and having dinner, then climbing those awful stairs only once to repeat the same the next day. Not being able to exercise my weight kept climbing and I couldn't do a thing about it so I had a plan:

1) gain weight since being 75 lbs. overweight didn't qualify for bariatric surgery (I needed to be 100 lbs. overweight)

2) have a hip replacement

3) have bariatric surgery

4) get my life back

Today my plan worked better than I anticipated and I walk every day because I CAN! My weight is exactly where I want it to be 155 lbs. and I'm 5'8". I ride bikes, fly kites, even wear bathing suits and sleeveless tops in public. YEAH!!! Make a plan and stick with it. Today I'm 61 years old a feel like I'm 40 and almost look like it!

My arthritis lessened when I lost the weight.  However, I do take Celebrex, which helps tremendously.  I am also dealing with herniated discs, for which I get cortisone shots and rhizotomies, which is the burning of the nerves.

I take Ultracet, which is Tramadol with Tylenol, and I wear the Butrans patch.  They also help.

Do not fret.  You may feel relief when the weight comes off.  My arthritis in my knees and ankles no longer bothers me.

Hugs,

Trish

Before WLS I had shots in my knees so I could walk. When I weighed 320 lbs my back used to seize up and all other joints hurt too.

Losing 200 lbs helped ENORMOUSLY!!! That was over 6 years ago and I've worked hard to keep the weight off.At 65 years old there are still some creaks and groans in the joints but nothing like it was before. I can walk easily and I even joined my granddaughter on the trampoline. that was a hoot.

Exercising, especially in a warm water pool, gives great relief. Never did I believe that exercise might help anything. Don't give up, just keep the faith and come to this great group for support.

Thanks everybody,  you have given me hope and reassured me that I am headed in the right direction.  3.5 days until surgery.  All the time it seemed it was taking so long and now it seems like it is getting here way to fast!
