Stormy Saturday
Hey All,
Vickie, I know how you feel about feeling more like the baby's mother than grandmother. I had my grandson the first two years of his life and then my daughter moved back in with us while she was pregnant with my granddaughter. Immediately after she moved in, she turned right back into the sullen teenage gir; evern though she was 30. When we finally got the renters out of our house down in the valley, and we cleaned it, painted it, and debugged it, we moved my daughter and her little family into the house. By then, she had had Baby Girl and Baby Girl had turned six months old…so you can imagine how great that was for me to take care of a four year old, a new born baby and a sullen daughter all while writing a dissertation. Good Grief…I do feel your pain.
Today, I have cleaned house and am doing laundry. As soon as I get the last load washed, dried, and folded, I'm getting back to sewing. I've been making cloth diapers for my granddaughter. My DIL likes the all in ones which are waterproof covers with the diapers sewn inside. I don't like the idea of the prefolded diapers not ever getting bleached, so I make the outer diaper (what we used to call plastic panties) out of really cute water proof fabric, and I sew a pocket inside so the prefolded diapers can be slipped in and out. That way, she can wash the prefolded diapers in bleach every so often and the little waterproof panties don't need to get ruined in the process. I also make little matching bibs…well the bibs match the outer panties. If you buy the outer covers in a baby store, they cost about 35 bucks for just one. The prefolded diapers cost a fortune too. I did buy about ten of the outer covers and one bundle of the prefolded diapers and I said, hell no. So, I've made her tons for no where near the price that they cost. And, we get to pick really cute fabric. Lately, I've made friends of mine sets of them too. One of my colleagues is having a baby shower next weekend, so I'm making her six outer covers and I'm buying two packages of prefolded diapers at walmart and that will be her shower gift.
It's really funny how young mothers today are going back to the old ways of doing things. Like buying cloth diapers so they don't have to spend all that money on disposable diapers. My DIL even makes her own baby wipe soap and last time I was at her house, she and I went to a thrift store and bought six old baby recieving blankets and I cut them up into small clothes and serged the edges and she uses those for baby wipes that she washes with the diapers. We used to use washclothes. I remember carrying wet washcloths in old bread sacks and when one of the kids needed cleaning, I'd pul out the wet washcloth and use it and then put it in another plastic bag with the diaper. Those days are coming back.
I even made my DIL one of those bags to carry in her diaper bag to keep the wet diapers and used cloths in. She said her friends are all jealous because they want one of those bags but in the store they cost too much. I am making her friends each one of the wet bags as they call them. They are made out of the same water proof material as the diaper covers but I add a lining inside.
Well, it's time for me to get that last load of clothers folded and I'm off to sew.
Hope you all have a good weekend.
