Aloha Karen,
It's always a joy to hear from you.  Your work must be so rewarding.  I know how much joy I get holding a newborn, especially one of my Munchins.  It does sound like your island is having a baby boom.  It also sounds like you love your work.

You're right.  We are a loving supportive group of people.  I feel blessed that I am part of this group.  Never feel you have to apologize for not checking in daily.  I once heard a saying at one of my 12 Step meetings:  Come when you can, leave when you must.

Hugs,
Trish

Thanks to all *****sponded. I'm slowly learning how this forum works. It seems every forum is a bit different.

Question: 6 months or a year down the road from the wls, can you have some caffeine again? I just like coffee and especially when it's cold. I don't drink more than 2 cups a day now and am weaning myself off it completely so it won't be an issue, just asking for future info. Obviously after the sleeve, one couldn't drink that much at one time anyway.

Mary,

I would definitely pose this question to your surgeon, as they can all differ on their instructions.  I was allowed coffee after 6 weeks, but in limited quantity and if you only drink 2 cups a day, well that would be ok by my surgeons rules, however, what you take in in caffeine, you must take in equal extra quantity of water, as caffeine is a diuretic. . .  Today at 4 years and almost 9 months post-op, I drink about 20 ounces of caffeine a day (mugs, not cups of coffee is what I drink), anything after that is decaf and I've been OK, the thing is that our stomachs are restricted by being made smaller, so the things they tell us to avoid are so we don't get ulcers.

Good luck to you.

Laureen

Aloha Trish.......Thank you for your sweet words. My job is very satisfying and life affirming. Sometimes I feel like I'm living my grandma life with other's babies. My three little grandsons live in Santa Cruz and I only get to see them once or twice a year. Before I moved to Maui 11 years ago, my son wasn't even seeing anyone....and now he's married, and had three beautiful little boys quickly...Ha. They are 4, 6 and 8!! I miss them.......and my son and DIL so much.

Love the 12 step saying......Come when you can, leave when you must. I also love the saying "Let go, Let God" Easier said than done though!!

Keep up the great work.........and thanks for being a part of this incredible support group.

Aloha nui loa,

Karen

Amen, Amen to all you said and while I'm not on here as often as I once was, I am living the life I can today because of this surgery. . .  because of this surgery, my, now 14 year old granddaughter, the same one, who for her 9th birthday wanted me to go to Disney with her and I couldn't do it because I weighed 254 lbs. and that kind of thing was not a possibility, but this year for her birthday she wanted New York pizza and so on July 4th, in the heat, we walked all over New York City, she had pizza and saw the World Trade Memorial, 42nd Street, 5th Avenue and the Statue of Liberty and I was able to enjoy the day with her; and because of this surgery, I was able to do the same in Philadelphia a couple of days ago, pre-op, an hour of walking did me in and in the heat, forget it. . .  I thank God for the gift that my skilled surgeon was able to give me, I live, laugh and love life more than ever!!!

Hugs, Laureen

Aloha dear Laureen.......You are such a wonderful inspiration not just for WLS but for living a life of healing and love.

I so know what you are talking about when you mentioned Disneyland and other physically challenging fun things. My weight got so bad that I could NOT do any of those things either. My big wake up call came when my son and DIL were expecting their first baby. I knew I did not want to be the "tutu" (grandama in Hawaii) who couldn't do anything....including getting down on the floor to play, and most definitely not qualified to go on any amusement park rides!!

Today, thankfully, I can do all of those things easily. I sometimes forget to be grateful for just those changes........major, but sometimes I take them for granted and don't want to ever do that again.

Thank you for all that you share on here......and I am so happy for you.

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen

You all are so sweet and welcoming. Thanks for sharing your experiences. They help so much. Surgery is scary and I just want a life. I also can't do anything anymore. We went on vacation to South Padre Island and TX. I had the worst vacation ever cause I couldn't walk more than 5-10 minutes. It was triple digits and I spent most of the time in the condo crying. It was pitiful and that is what pushed me to decided to do this. It's hard to believe I got myself to this point but I did and just have to deal with it. All your replies gave me the warm fuzzies and tears in my eyes because you all understand where I am at now and it's such a rarity. Thanks again.
