Hello! I was hoping there was a special forum for those of us over 50- so glad to read you all. I am a 58 year old Michigan Gramma who wants to be around to enjoy my grandchildren. On my 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Looking for advice and suggestions from those who have been there.
Thanks, Sue

Sue,

I was 52 when I had my surgery and all I can say is, it's one of the best decisions I've made.  I have 4 grandchildren, oldest being 14 and 10 and they had a different gramma from the younger set, that are now 6 and 5.  I am only held back today, by what I don't want to do and I live a very active lifestyle outside of my 8 to 4 job, I got some of the aches and pains of age, but otherwise am quite healthy.  I had RNY, but WLS generally lands us all in the same place, Healthier and richer living!!!

What I can offer in the way of advice is two components that I adhere to, support from people who get it (other WLSrs) and exercise of some form, which lately has been an early morning walk of at least 30 to 60 minutes with my 4-legged child and some weight training (strengthening muscle groups) and squats.  You may not be able to do a lot of exercise right now, but the sooner you find an activity you like and make it your business to do it, the better off you will be long-term, because there comes a time when you need that component to maintain your weightloss and health (maintenance phase).

I wish you lots of good things, sometimes it's a bumpy road, but ooh so worthwhile!

Laureen

Hi Sue, & welcome to our forum. Make sure you walk & drink lots of fluids. After my surgery, almost 7 years ago, I could only get 3 oz. of yogurt in. Do not try & over eat. I am sure you will do great! Nan

Welcome Sue, You'll find lots of support and love on this forum. They have helped be in untold ways. Congratulations on your decision to get healthy. I was 63 when I had my surgery about 15 months ago. It has enabled me to do so many things with my 8 grandbabbies (19 to 7). Ask any questions that come to mind and there is always someone willing to help!

Follow all your doctor tells you to do especially sip water and exercise and you will do wonderfully. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Prayers are being sent your way.
