An Update: Lamenting the Lack of Learning

So, a few weeks ago, DH was set to have the transplant; however, preop blood work revealed a very high blood sugar.  We went to our PCP and they put him on insulin and other meds.  A couple of weeks ago, his blood sugar soared out of control again and his blood pressure went off the charts.  They admitted him to the hospital and kept him in ICU for a few days, and then they put him on the medical floor where they continued to monitor him.  In the mean time, we got a call from the eye surgeon and they have another eye.  So, DH gets out of the hospital on Tuesday and we head to Little Rock on Wednesday, and this morning, they did the transplant.  He is resting and we won’t know until tomorrow morning if his cornea is attaching.  Meanwhile, his blood sugar is back off the charts and we are doing insulin like every couple of hours.  I finally told everyone to just back the **** off and let me think about all of this.  I mean, one nurse came in and said, we need to give him insulin and I said, no, he has had the insulin last night and has not eaten anything.  She said, well we gave him glucose, and I said, why! And she said, well we meant to hang Normal Saline.  I said, crap.  So, I took his blood sugar, called the PCP, told him about the glucose, he said,  hold off on the insulin but do keep taking his sugars.  The nurse said, you have to let me give the insulin and I said, nope, his doctor said no.  The medical doctor from the hospital came in and I said, he had his insulin last night and it is long lasting…in surgery, they gave him glucose, he hasn’t eaten anything, if you give him that regular insulin, his sugar will bottom out.  I said, I am in touch with our PCP who is talking to the endocrinologists and if you want to help, get an endocrinologist in here.  They did, and he said, good.  You stood your ground and his blood sugar is coming down.   The nurses hate me.  I don’t give a flying ****

Oh, and this is a teaching hospital, so I’m like, you ain’t learning are you or are you all in the remedial classes!  Then, I went down stairs and said to the nurse, do not give him one thing while I am gone. I have to eat.  Down stairs, there is the woman wearing tights for pants and she is as big as a freaking hog and her tights are white and her panties are up her crack and she bends over and omg, you got it. I saw more crack than any one ought to see.  Then I’m hearing her phone conversation about her relief check not making it and how much she gets and then she starts spraying this crappy body spray and she laughs and says, I didn’t get a shower today and stink a little.  I wanted to die.  Then the guy next to her sticks his hands down the front of his pants and I thought, oh hell no.  I bypassed food and went back to the room and DH was crying in pain.  I gave him one of my pain pills, and gave him one of my nausea pills from when I was sick a while back, and now he is resting.  Blood sugar down, lights off, dumb assed medical staff all on notice.   Did I say I think his nurses and doctors (not his surgeon) are all here learning and they may all be in the remedial class?  I’m so screwed.  On the bright side: I got hit on by the wino that is sleeping in the hallway.  I think he said something like ain’t you a pretty little thing.  If we can make it through tonight, we will be fine.

I messaged you back.   We are at UAMS but are in the clinic today.  I asked the surgeon to let us check into a hotel and I'll bring him back tomorrow morning.  The freakin' nursing staff is dangerous as hell.  One came in and was going to take the patch off of his eye and so she started raising the head of his bed. I said, he is supposed to lie flat; she said, I need to change the patch; I said, bend the **** over; she said, lying flat doesn't mean all the time; I said, for him it means all the time.   Geeze.  So, now we are in a hotel near the clinic.  I have him sedated, he has had his medication, he is drinking fluids and has eaten, and the doctor called me and I said, he is so much better now that we are out of the hospital.  They are total morons.

I was an RN or was practicing RN for almost twenty years and if the doctor said keep her flat, I kept her flat.  I cannot imagine their thinking.   It's like, no only means no if it is about a refil on coffee?

Oh lightswitch what a nightmare.  Kudos for indimidating the hell out of the hospital staff.  What a bunch of morons.  It's really scary how mediocre so many of the younger people in medicine are.  There is no common sense!

The story about the fat hottie in leggings had me peeing in my pants.   I never had much patience for fat women who dress as if they are a size zero, and now that I'm thinner, I'm a real snob about it.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your DH as he recuperates (in spite of the medical staff at that looney bin).

Hang in there,

Hugs,

Maria

Thanks,

I am at the point where I ask what are you doing and why and show me the order and prove to me it has to be done.   I don't let them change his eye patch and they are not allowed to give him his eye drops or his medication or insulin.   I refuse to let them have any control over his body other than to come in and account for him being here.   They are, without a doubt, morons.

Hope today dawns with Kenny stable and starting to mend. The first two days after surgery for me are always the pits. The heavy duty pain stuff begins to wear off and reality sets in. Wish I could be there in person but know that you and Kenny are right close to my heart as I go about my day today. You're a tough lady; do what has to be done. You can be human later! Hugs,

Karen C

Thanks Karen.Unfortuantely, his cornea didn't attach.  They took him back to surgery this morning and put air behind it and moved the iris away from the graft.  The doctor is checking it tomorrow morning and he said, don't worry, even if it isn't attached tomorrow, it could still attach after a week but if not, we will just do it again with a new cornea.  So, round one may be a failure.  I have learned a ton of what I will do and bring for the next round, whether it is for a repeat of this eye or his left eye.   Geeze.

Connie,

I don't know if it is because I am surrounded by little rich kids from Arkansas, Tx, and Ok, but I didn't know that women who are as fat as a house and my age were dressing like they are a size 0 and 15.  Crap.  It is funny though to see them prancing around.   LOL

Wow, what are they teaching these folks? I know when my dad was dying, we had to beg for pain meds ... he's dying, he's not going to get addicted. I literally yelled at the nurse, who said I have to ask the doctor and he's not available. I told her to get another doc. My dad was telling me to tell the newspaper how inept these people were, but it was hard to understand them because he didn't have his dentures in ... this was in 1984. So things haven't improved over the years, huh?

Glad you have the balls to get after these folks or your hubby would be dead.
