Met with Surgeon today...got bad news :(

I know you all will understand me venting here...

I got a call yesterday from my surgeon's office that he wanted to see me.

I went in a bit nervous and curious about what was so urgent he'd call me in after I was in the office yesterday.

When I visited him the first time, I told him I wanted the gastric sleeve only and did not want RNY or lapband. His response was 'let's see what happens..you can decide later'..   The reason I wanted the sleeve is because my gastroenterologist said that my esophagus has some 'motility' problems in that my esophagus muscle does not always act as it should....squeezing to move the food down.

When the  surgeon was reading my medical history further and found this report and told me today that I an not a candidate for ANY WLS.

I am pretty upset about this.    I did not make the decision to have the surgery easily....and now this.  One of the exercise trainers saw me in the hallway and said 'what's wrong?"..;and when I told him about not being a candidate for WLS he said 'Everything happens for a reason....the first time you tried to get WLS you had heart issues......and now you have this".......

I guess he is right...but tonight.... I am so down I can't even talk to anyone.   I came here to vent a bit, because I know you'll all understand what the WLS meant to me and why I feel this way.

(((Linda))) first I am sad for you. Have you thought about asking another WLS dr? If it was me...I would find another dr and see what he thought! Hang in there Linda as I am sure there IS a dr out there that WILL give you WLS!!!

When I was first trying to have mine done the dr I had did NOT want to do my WLS because I had scare tissue from another surgery that I had had a couple years before. I got another dr and he said YES I could have the WLS!!!! I thank God I had someone tell me to go to another dr before giving up!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Judy for your posting.

I do have a lot of problems swallowing and the surgeon (and my research) has told me that there is a number, albiet small, of patients who have WLS and get problems with motility in their esophagus after WLS (in particular the band and the RNY) .  I thought the sleeve would do it, but the doctor told me that the sleeve is even more restrictive as he puts something at the bottom of the esophagus to make the food side there and slowly empty into the stomach.

After seeing his sincerity and talking with my gastroenterologist who is adamently against me getting any kind of WLS...I am giving in to the situation.

I will adjust... just need some time.   I have signed up for a weight loss program which is actually headed by my cardiac surgeon. He'll be glad to see me there...and he already knows my heart history , so I think it will go well.

I also learned this week that I have left ventricular hypertrophy....enlargement of the left ventricle of my heart.

When it rains, it pours.

I am just so sad about this all.    I'll adjust, but it will take a few days.

Hugs Linda and please listen to the doctor's they do know best.
You have done your research and believe me if they tell you that due to your esophagus muscle's not working like it should you would be in a world of hurt with WLS. It's not for everyone and I'm so proud of you educating yourself on WLS.

Kudo's for you signing up for a cardiac weight loss program.
If you stick with any weight loss program you will lose the weight. The key is portion control and exercise. Mindful eating too. That is what I do now that I can't exercise like I use to.
WLS is NOT the magic answer either. It does put us heavier gals/guys on the playing field with others because we have a tool. I mean we all have screwed up our system with "life long diets''...we are either 'ON" a diet of "OFF" a diet.

I know your disappointed but it's the end all at all. This is just the beginning for you.
A beginning of:
Lifestyle change with your cardiac program! We are cheering you on!! Hugs Debbie

 Oh Honey,
I am so sorry for this decision.  I would have been devastated if it turned out I was not a candidate.

I don't know where you live in Pennsylvania, but I am in Lower Bucks County.  If you are nearby, we could become walking buddies.  I can build up to a good pace, and know some good walking places.

Hugs,
Trish

Thanks, Trish.

I live in Lancaster county in the Elizabethtown area, So I'm afraid it's too far for me to go.

I'm  a bit better this morning.   Still pretty upset up it all tho as I'd already been to one class and met with the nutritionist, exercise guy and the psychologist.   I was on my way.  I think I just need to wrap my mind around it and get over the disappoinment and let it all go.   I cried last night,  I think that helped a bit.

The doctor explained that had I told him in the beginning, he'd have told me it wouldn't have worked.  I thought going for the sleeve would have been the way to go, but he said in every WLS the foot sits first at the bottom of the esophagus.  In my case, it would not have been able to move thru the bottom of the esophagus into the pouch or stomach and I'd have been very sick...regurgitating all my food.

I will go the medical weight management program to meet the director and see what I think of it all and I'll move on from there.   I am just so sad.

I'm very sorry about your disappointment. Things do work out for the best and if you are working with a professional I think you will have good results without risking your life with surgery. It sounds like you have an excellent doctor that is putting your best interest first. My best wishes for you.
