Haven't been on here for a long time but I do read the posts . I know most of you can relate. I have gained 20 lbs this year and really want to shed this before it gets out of hand! I am a stress eater for sure and it's pretty bad. My 38 yr old daughter (insert shudder here), who dumped 4 kids on us over the last 20 yrs, is back in town and homeless (again). She is an alcoholic bi -polar who WON'T take medication. The 19 & 20 yr olds are immune to her headgames but what do you tell 5 % 9 yr olds? She always finds some way of weaseling into their life. I swear she is watching to see when I am away from the phone. Anyway, I really am having a difficult time not turning to food. I know it isn't rational. I have an apt. with my shrink on Friday so wish me luck. Thanks for letting me vent. My pitty party will be over soon, I hope. You guys are the best because no one can know what weight struggles are if you haven't done it.
Hang in there William! we all have to have a pity party now and then...in fact, if you read my post above yours, I'm having one myself today.
When you look to turn to food, if you could take a step back and remember all your hard work and how you don't want those 20 lbs to be 21, that could help. I'm not a good person to respond here, but I wanted you to know that I think we all struggle with this issue from time to time.
Good luck !
Linda

I attend Overeaters Anonymous (same program as AA) that offers me coping skills. Look on-line to see if there are meetings in your area; if not you could try other anonymous 12-step programs that Alonon. Stress eating over situations you can't control doesn't help anyone; especially you!

HI Mimi,
I am so sorry you are going through this. Our Adult-kids are the ones that can really get to us. I think making that appointment is the best thing you can do for yourself right now.
I always try to remember that I can only change me and not change my 33 y/o daughter. It is hard to do sometimes.
I know I pray when my food choices are out of control. It works for me. I also have a favorite bible verse that I say to myself when I need to start over because I have been stress-eating.
Some people do meditation, breathing exercizes, exercize (I wish that were me), reading. Find your place of zen.
Hugs,
Sharon

Hello Mimi....nice to see you here.
I have finally gone back to basics and it is working for me. I am losing slower but that is okay too. In about 6 weeks I have lost 14 pounds. I am happy with myself and I feel so much better.
No junk food or carbs and I measure my food again. Back to using a small plate and utensils and that helps too. I also put my fork down between bites. Protein first then veggies. A snack of fruit at some point in the day.
The first week was the hardest. Now I can shop and can't even look at the food that isn't good for me.
I wish you luck in what ever you chose to do.
So sorry about the family issues. I will be praying for you.

Hi there,
So sorry you are dealing with this situation. In addition to being an overeater, I am also an alcoholic and bipolar. When I was not taking the right dose of one of my meds, I relapsed and could not get any real sobriety till I landed in the psych ward and then an inpatient rehab.
It's a shame she won't take her meds. There is no hope of her getting sober unless she has her meds stablized. She has no idea how she is hurting her kids, and robbing herself of their childhoods.
I have done OA, and it is a great support for us overeaters. I got lots of coping skills there. Right now, I am focusing on AA, though I do stop in at an occasional meeting of OA.
I have not done Alanon, though I am thinking of trying it, because my heroin addicted son is now drinking and smoking marijuana. He is 29 and lives six hours away.
God bless.
Trish

Seek always to do some good, somewhere. Every man has to seek in his own way to realize his true worth. You must give some time to your fellow man. For remember, you don't live in a world all your own. Your brothers are here too.
