What's Up on Saturday?
Judy, I was just going to post a reply to you when your post popped up! Great minds, huh?
Listen, gal, your new job is draining you right now because it's all so new and you have so much to learn. But it sounds like you are on top of things and learning fast. OMG, I don't know if I could keep my cool with all those people and problems coming at me every day! Are you sure your new title isn't "fireman"? Because all you do is run around putting out fires all day! LOL!
Besides, when I was working full time, I didn't do all this extra stuff either. It's only since I've quit work that I've had time to do other things.
You just enjoy your day off and rest up as much as you can. It's okay to take it easy for a day. You're a true gem, and Rick is lucky to have you. I think it's sweet that he tells people you're 44. Lord know, I wish I was 44 again. Oh to have the last 10 years back. I wouldn't have spent them being so fat, you know? It's wonderful to have a little energy to spend again.
Love ya!

Hi Vickie,
Wow you are a busy bee.
Now that they're both turning 30, maybe Carrie and Robert will look into each other's eyes and... bang!
The sparks will fly. Make sure she wears a sexy outfit to the party. You could be her
godmother.
What can I say? Hope springs eternal and all that.
Have a great weekend.

Well, now, that WOULD be an event. I can still see them at age 4 holding hands at the skating rink trying to keep each other from falling down! LOL!
But to tell you the truth, I hope that little stinky Cupid fella just leaves Carrie alone until she finishes this Ph.D. She had a long "lost" period in her life where she didn't do much of anything but run around and play and drink, and she had two or three bums for boyfriends, etc. I didn't think she would ever get her head on straight. Now she is holding a 4.0 in grad school and is halfway through a Ph.D. in Chemistry. I want her to FINISH this degree and not get sidetracked by a man again.
However, she could do a lot worse than Robert (and has done so frequently in the past!), so I wouldn't be upset if some sparks flew tonight! I know she is lonely.
I'm enjoying your posts. Our stats are very similar, except you're a lot closer to goal than I am. Gives me hope that I'll get there too one day. If you don't mind me asking, how much weight did you lose the first year and how much came off after that?
Thanks, and you have a good weekend, too!
Vic

Hi Vic,
Carrie sounds like she is finally on the road to success; however, if Robert is the right guy, he won't sidetrack her. Let's hope not just for sparks, but for fireworks tonight...We moms want our girls happy and in love.
I went down to 195 in the first 8 months, then had a thyroidectomy and hit the mother of all plateaus until the doctors figured out the right Synthroid dose. After 4 months, I began to lose weight slowly at about 6 to 8 lbs. a month. But my case is not typical because of the thyroidectomy. Most people I know have lost about 90% of the weight in the first year; then went below goal, gained about 10-20 lbs. and settled down. Many have not gained any weight at all and maintained their goal weight. Some have gained all the weight back, and then some. For some reason, many teachers fall into this category -- must be the stress.
I don't want to frighten you, but the biggest danger is transferring addictions. Lots of alcoholics and drug addicts after RNY who did not have the problems before. My cousin got so bad, he had to be Baker Acted and is now a member of AA, and I hear similar stories at my monthly support group meetings.
Don't worry about what happens to other people; keep your eye on the prize, and don't let anything make you lose your focus. You'll be there before you know it.
I enjoy reading your posts also. Do you teach at a college?
Ciao,
Maria

Maria,
Well, I have had a checkered career to say the least, but yes, I did teach freshman composition at the state university here for a couple of years. But for the last 5 years I was there, I served as an academic advisor for at risk students. I also taught English on both the jr high and senior high levels. So I have had lots of student interactions. I really like young adults, and some of them are just amazing young people. But more and more, like you, I have seen a horrible decline in morals and social standards. I'm not being judgemental. It was also evident in my own two daughters. I think it's a generational thing. I guess we'll just have to wait for the pendulum to swing back the other way. It eventually will.
I'm not worried about transfer addictions. I'm well aware of that phenomenon, but I'm not a drinker. My dad was a heavy drinker, and as a consequence, I've never been tempted much by alcohol. Or cigarettes or drugs, etc. I'm a pretty straight gal. Now I am thoroughly addicted to Cokes and chocolate! Haven't had a Coke in over a year now. Still want one every day of my life though! And I'm doing my level best not to let chocolate back into my diet. I've had a few bites, but not much. If I ever let it get started again, I'll be sunk.
My one year surgiversary is next week. I had really hoped to have lost 100 pounds by then, but it's not going to happen. I'm not complaining. I'm thrilled to be in the 180's and wearing a size 16 instead of a size 24! But I would really like to get all the way to goal. Of course, it would help if I would exercise more. I know I'm not doing everything I can.
Do you teach in high school? What grades? What subject? I can relate to the stress! Public school teachers deserve a medal for all the stress they deal with on a daily basis. Good for you for maintaining! I always suspected I had a thyroid problem, but I was tested for it twice and nothing ever showed up. However I have the coldest hands and feet in history, which is supposed to be one of the main symptoms of thyroid problems. I'm glad they got yours diagnosed and it's now under control with medication.
I'll post tomorrow and let you all know how Carrie's evening went, but I can tell she's not even thinking about anything romantic this evening. She's just looking for a little relaxation and a break from the grind of grad school. She's excited to seeing some of her old gang and catching up with her friends.

Hi Vic,
Although I moan and complain about incidents such as the ones on Friday, teaching is my passion, and teaching high school is what I like to do best. Unfortunately, I my vocal cords were damaged by the thyroidectomy, so now I run the ESOL department at a Miami high school, and co-teach English literature and ESOL languare arts to small groups. Retirement is two years away, but my principal wants me to come back on a part time basis, so I guess I'll teach till the day I die.
Are you taking a break from work?
It's good you know your weaknesses are on guard against them. I had issues with soda and compulsive shopping. Too bad there is no Shoppers Anonymous.
You have not hit the 100-lb. mark, but you are very close, and if you stay on course with your eating plan (no diets for us), you will reach your goal. I remember the joy of getting into a size 16, but being able to cross my legs was the greatest feeling. It's good to look for milestones that don't involve the scale.
I can't wait to hear how Carrie enjoyed her party.
I'm going to post a new pic of me in a strapless dress, showing off my new arms and perky breasts. Let's see if I can manage it.
Happy Presidents' Day!
Maria

Hi Trish and my OFF family:
Well, my second try at the colonoscopy went as planned ... I was sufficiently cleaned out that the doctor was able to do it. He removed one polyp. Then I had to wait around for my boss to pick me up. First he had to take his girlfriend/significant other to the doctor (she also has had gastric bypass but had some major complications two years ago; she is 10 years out); then he had to take his car to the shop for brake work. So it was nearly 3:30 p.m. by the time he got there. So I sat there reading my magazine, drinking diet pop and waiting. Boy, I was hungry. Finally, one of the nurses gave me some Cheez-Its. At least something, not really healthy but I was ready for anything. At that point, he showed up. Richard has a little two-seat sports car. So Cindy, his girlfriend, had to sit in the trunk (but not like a normal trunk; she could see us and outside). We had a nice chat ... I like her a lot, too.
I got home and chowed down; made eggs, ham and cheese with a whole grain English muffin and sf orange marmalade, and that filled me up nicely. Then I took a nap in my chair; finally, I just went to bed to sleep for an hour, then just stayed there and watched TV in bed. Went to sleep at 11 p.m. or so, I was so tired. Woke up today with a headache. Can't call in sick today, so I'm trying to tough it out, get rid of the headache. It's gradually going away ... can't tell if it's a sinus or a migraine ... the migraine med is kinda working, but not quite. I also took an allergy pill with decongestant to see if that would work. And, of course, caffeine. Maybe the shower will help, too. I had an ice pack on my neck, then the top of my head to see if that helped.
It was good to sleep through last night without having to get up and poop or drink that gunk.
Well, anyway, back to work tonight. Glad to be going back and doing something useful. Hope everyone has a good day.

Good afternoon everyone!
It is a cool (63F) and sunny Saturday afternoon and I have lounged in bed until a couple of hours ago. Just came back from grocery shopping.
Decided to make liver and onions (working on that stubborn anemia) and invited my cousin and her husband over for dinner, but I had forgotten how disgusting calf liver is to prepare. Ugh! Not a chance of that happening again.
Eileen sorry to hear you had to have a second colonoscopy. I had one last year and the pooping festival just went on and on. Just when I thought there could be no more left in me, more would come out. Talk about being full of it! Hope you get good news from the doctor.
We should have a good time though; we always do.
Hope you all have a great weekend.
