Even worse. Sure makes me wonder how much of all of this cancer and also things like autism have environmental issues behind them. I know my parents ate things that clogged arteries, BUT they were all natural things that they either grew, canned, or otherwise processed themselves. No preservatives, no hormones added. Their chickens were truly "free range."

The movie "Food Inc" just about made me literally vomit. Those poor chickens couldn't even stand up.

We live in Tyson farms country and there are long chicken and turkey houses spread out everywhere and those animals that live in them cannot move; they are packed so tight.  When they move them from farm to plant, they are picked up by the feet and thrown into cages and again packed in so tight that they cannot move and are loaded on a truck and hauled down the highway.  It is not uncommon to see the poor things dead or dying.  Some are picked up in the pens that they were raised in, to cut out hiring men and women to transfer them into pens for the truck and their feet literally grow into the cage wrire.  As much as I love Chicken, I avoid any that are mass produced.  I go to a local farm where the chickens are truly free ranged and not fed antibiotics.  Those raised in pens are hatched and matured in six months or less and their breasts are so large, they cannot even walk.  I canno****ch those horrible documetaries about how we treat animals.  I wish I could live without eating any meat.

Oh Jeannie, I feel the same way. They were thousands of hens and roosters roaming all over Kauai. Evidently about 20 yrs ago a hurricane tore things up including chicken farms. Since then the Roaster is almost Kauai's state bird. As matter of fact there are t shirts to that effect! Anyway if one had to be homeless, Kauai wouldn't be bad. The chickens are truly "free range" and quite friendly. A warm fire on the beach, roasted chicken, fresh eggs, local fruits and veggies. Hmmm, maybe when I grow up!

Margo,

How happy to see you here. . .  I know you've been dealing with cancer from FB, but am so glad you came back to OFF.  As Karen put it, we are a very diverse group of folks and there is bound to be a bit of ruffling and controversy once in a while, but the spirit of this board is really one of helpfulness and concern for one another. . .  love you, miss you and glad you're here, hope you come back as often as you can.
