I hate it when people comment on what others are eating, in the "should you really eat that?" kind of way!  Not just when I am on the receiving end of the comments -- but when anyone is on the receiving end of comments.

It makes me want to stand up and scream "LEAVE THEM ALONE! YOU AREN'T BEING HELPFUL!!"  And...as an aside, they are making my job harder.

Guilt and "shouldn'ts" don't work in the long-term.  They just don't.

Lots of things don't work in the long-term.  Atkins, for example.  It doesn't work because most of us don't want to live that way any longer than we have to to get the weight off.  Definitely not a long-term solution.

Sure...guilt and shouldn'ts stick with us -- but they don't stop us.  They just make us feel bad about our eating.

Want a new approach?  One that might be a great fit for your family (since eating behaviors and obesity tend to run in families)?  Check out the NPR story on the Packard Pediatric Weight Control Program. Kids don't need the guilt......and neither do you!!

Recently I had lunch at a Cracker Barrel in SC. I only ate a small amount of my lunch, but decided I wanted a scoop of sf ice cream for dessert. My waitress said "but you haven't finished your lunch". I pointed out that at my age I didn't have to finish my meal to get dessert. When she delivered my ice cream she appologized, saying she had a 4 year old and was always reminding him of that.
It's pretty bad when a complete stranger who knows nothing of your situation, tells you how to eat!

Lucky for me, my hubby is thin, active, eats heathy and has never had a weight problem. I made a very concerted effort when my kids were little not to associate any emotional value to food. Never forbid them cookies, ice cream, ... and they ate their meat and vegetables too, even liked them. The upshot, when they have a treat, the eat just what they want and either save the rest or throw it away. They're active and healthy (well, the one in college could probably eat a little better, and you know the freshman 15, he probably gained the freshman 5-10). But they eat because they're hungry or really want a treat, not for any other reasons, so I feel like I succeeded at something.

Absolutely you are a success!

I'm encouraging my stepdaughter who is a first time mommy that babies have an inner sensor, that they will stop when they are full and not to push food on them.

When my son was around 2 or 3, he kept asking how much he had to eat of his dinner before he could have dessert.  Rather than making it a power struggle, we simply decided that we would only have dessert on Shabbot (Friday night) and special occasions.  I made sure to make a balanced meal every night but make there was something they would eat every night on the table and asked them to at least taste everything.  Sometimes one of them would just eat the pasta.  I never cooked separate meals for them.  As they got older and if they didn't like what I served, they would make themselves a bowl of cerial.  I always made sure to have an extra special dessert on the table.  We rarely pressured them about food.  Now they are 16 and 19 and eat healthy, though they have their treats and when they don't finish dessert, they give to dad to finish.  Of course, my 6'1" hubby weighs 168+-3 pounds and has since I met him when we were 18, and eats very healthy and exercises a lot.

I just wish I could have picked up on all that healthiness before I had RNY.  I use to think that if being heavy was the one bad thing in my life, everything would be perfect.  Then both my kids were diagnosed with Crohn's.  So much for that theory.  :)

Jan,
I have a stepsister who has an eating disorder or at least she did when she was younger. Her mom would TIE her in the baby chair and make her eat her food. Needless to say did that work? Nope, and she remain very skinny and I believe she still is very thin. She hates to eat and she was traumatized as a youngster...give the kid a vitamin and your okay is most cases. Kids have an inner sensor that tells them to stop eating and us adults push food on them.
We were taught to "clean our plates" this lifetime habit of cleaning my plate...didn't need that rule either! LOL

It's a joy to leave 3 bites on my plate now. Practice mindful eating and eat what I want and stop eating when the food doesn't taste fantastic in my mouth. No guilt.
Now...staying away from potato chips...I don't keep them in my house. When hubby goes shopping with me and wants chips I just tell him to get his Jalapeno chips (yucky to me) and I won't eat them. I also won't eat his donuts he has to have either.
